A fine Georgian sabre by Prosser to Ernest Augustus the Duke of Cumberland and King of Hanover, 84cm curved blade with clipped back point and etched for its entire length with false damascus, further inlaid in gold with a panel of stylised calligraphy flanked by celestial images, this mirrored to the other side of the blade, large gilt stirrup hilt with two scrolling side bars, the bold lion's head pommel unusually featuring the lion's legs crossed and trailing down the back strap, wire bound chequered ebonised grips, contained in its gilt scabbard with maker's panel for PROSSER Charing Cross LONDON beneath the throat. Provenance Sothebys Royal House of Hannover sale - also retains its original stamped brass inventory tag - 81.
A rare Ethiopian Menelik II King's Guard Sword, 82cm curved fullered blade profusely etched with scrolling foliage and stands of arms, further etched with the Lion of Judah and a panel of calligraphy translating to Menelik, and to the other side with an image of St George and a panel of calligraphy translating to St George, etched with the initials GG and a further inscription at the forte, steel stirrup hilt with traces of plated finish, the langets decorated with an image of the Lion of Judah and two initials, ribbed wooden grip, contained in its leather scabbard. Menelik II (1844-1913) reigned from 1889-1913 confronting and defeating the Italians in their attempts to expand their empire.
