SOKUHI NYOITSU (CHI-FEI JU-I 1616-1671) Poetic calligraphy describing bamboo and recollecting dreams by the window in moonlight, signed 'Sokuhi-sho', sealed 'Nyoitsu no in', 'Sokhui' and 'Rinzai sanju-san-sei', ink on paper, circa 52.5" (132cm) x 10.5" (26.7cm), within a silk border, mounted as a hanging scroll and framed Provenance: The collection of the late Major Michael Pitt-Rivers, acquired in the 1950s or 1960s. The collection of the late William Gronow Davis MFH. Sokuhi Nyoitsu (Chi-fei Ju-i) was and Obaku Zen Buddhist monk-priest who originated in China but migrated to Japan and became abbot of the Sofukuji Temple. He was an accomplished poet and calligrapher. His teachers Ingen Ryuki, Mokuan Shoto and Sokuhi were known as the "Three Brushes of Obaku".
BY OR AFTER CHEN LIN (ca. 1260-1320) A myna standing on a withered tree with red leaves and white chrysanthemum flowers, signed Chen Lin, dated 1300, with one seal of the artist, and two inscriptions by Dianxian and Xu Fong, and two collector's seals, hanging scroll, ink and colour on paper, 37" (94cm) x 14" (35.6cm) (not including calligraphy band printed at the top). Provenance: A single-owner collection of Chinese paintings inherited from Colonel B.K. Blount CB (Special Operations Executive in China in World War II). Blount inherited some of the older pictures in the group from Sir Arthur Kennedy GCMG CB, Governor of Hong Kong between 1872 and 1877.
