Two Indo-Persian paintings The first: A two-sided calligraphied and painted book page depicting figures in a landscape, the painting presumably 20th century but the paper and calligraphy older, possibly as early as 17th century, unframed gouache and ink on paper; the second: an 18th or 19th century image of a standing saint, gouache and ink on paper laid to board with gilt highlights under glass, the first: image 10`` x 5``; paper 12.25`` x 7.25``. The second: image 5.25`` H x 3.25`` W, est: $600/900 Provenance: Private Collection, Pasadena, CA. Condition: The first: Minor toning and soiling throughout with a heavier area of soiling and staining along the lower edge. Some fine, scattered stable craquelure in the painting. Some scattered spots of tape and paper residue along the verso margin edge. Adhered to the front mat with paper tape in the four corners and along the upper center edge. The second: With four scattered areas of loss in the lower margin edge. A 1`` vertical scattered line of loss in the left center margin. A repaired tear, approximately 2`` in the lower left related to the losses. Possible restoration to the paint in the lower left. Tiny minor wrinkles in the paper in the upper right. A silver epergne centrepiece by Robert Welch, Birmingham 1978, the central detachable lightly hammered bowl on a high straight stem, the four detachable subsidiary bowls on curved stems, on a circular spreading base, the bowl interiors gilt, 30cm (11 7/8in) high, 2710g (87.1 oz); together with a calligraphy presentation dated 1978. The presentation reads ‘This Epergne, designed by Robert Welch and made in his workshop at Chipping Camden by John Limbrey, was commissioned by the Directors of Hoskins and Horton and Presented To William George Ainge Russell as a token of their affection and in grateful recognition of Twenty Five years of Partnership in their work, September 11th 1978’.

[?Damascus, 15th Century], ten glossy laid paper leaves, small quarto format, text in black ink with some red, approximately nineteen lines per page; later inscriptions in purple ink, some side notes slightly trimmed in later marbled paper wrappers, 8 x 5 3/4 in. [Dalail al-Khayyirat, Guide to Good Deeds, Prayers, Poetry], manuscript on paper in Arabic, Ottoman Turkey, with gilt and colored illuminations of Mecca and Medina, and embellishments,18th century, rebound in later red goatskin, stamped in gold, with flap, first leaf mounted, 5 1/2 x 3 1/4 in. Dervis Ahmet Manuscript by Mehmet, Arabic manuscript on paper, six leaves, early 18th century, attributed to the court calligrapher to Sultan Ahmet III, in gilt morocco binding; some leaves with holes repaired, some leaves mounted, all guarded, resewn, 6 1/4 x 4 in. Arabic calligraphy, approximately thirty-three leaves removed from various Arabic manuscripts from 16th to 19th centuries, condition and sizes vary. Burmese Parabaik, astrological or tattoo manuscript, 20th century, single sheet accordion-style text block with lightweight blackened wood covers carved with an image of a man on one side and a cat on the other, twelve openings accessible from both sides, with polychrome images throughout, images and text in pen and ink, enhanced with crayon and colored pencil throughout, depicting mainly tigers and humans; outer covers 8 3/4 x 4 3/4 in., the sheet measuring 9 3/4 feet when the accordion is fully extended; text leaves with minor smudging throughout.
