A Chinese silver basket, maker's mark of TG Of pierced oval form, decorated with various floral motifs and calligraphy, standing on florally cast bun feet, the underside marked. 28.5 cm wide. CONDITION REPORTS: Generally in good condition, some slight misshaping, some small splits, general wear. Approximately 11.8 troy ounces.
A Chinese Republic porcelain vase decorated with sage and boys in a garden setting with calligraphy and seal mark verso, bears faux Kangxi four character mark to base, 25.5 cm high CONDITION REPORTS Numerous surface scratches, accretions, some pinpricks and imperfections to the glaze. There is a repair to the rim of the vase and an area of loss. Wear and tear commensurate with age and use. See photos for details.

[CLUNY ABBEY]: Benedictine monastery in Cluny, France, dedicated to St. Peter. Its earliest basilica was the largest church one in the world until the St. Peter´s construction began in Rome. Rare 14th century parchment with an extremely attractive large wax seal, one page, oblong large folio, Cesena, 1358, given by Audrouin de la Roche, to Archbishop Petrignano, in Latin. De la Roche was a Benedictine abbot, who was in Cluny from 1351 to 1361, and who would be created Cardinal in Avignon by Pope Innocent VI. At the time of the present document, De la Roche was acting in his capacity as Apostolic Legate and General Governor of the Papal States in Italy. The document is an “Officium Capitaneatus” appointing several members of a diocese. Rare Cluny Abbey seal attached at the base of the document, in fine condition, showing a bishop figure and latin text around. Very carefully and neatly written with attractive calligraphy, and in very fine condition. VG £1500-2000 In 1357 the Papal troops conquered the city of Cesena and in 1360 Abbot Audrouin participated in the Peace Treaty negotiations between France and England
XU ZHIMO: (1897-1931) Famous Chinese free-thinking Poet. Widely considered one of the most renowned romantic poets of 20th century Chinese literature. Xu Zhimo died at the early age of 34 in an airplane crash.Rare and exceptional attractive calligraphy autograph album, 11.5 x 15, twenty-four pages, fifteen of them showing carefully written Chinese texts, annotations or statements by various eminent Chinese personalities, mostly writers. The hard cover album, with foldable inside large pages, contains two sets of attractive original handwritten Chinese calligraphy, including Xu Zhimo, Chinese calligraphy, paint brush, being a “Long Life” congratulation to Yu Shangwan for his 30th birthday, signed to the left in his hand; Lu Ding Yi (1906-1996) Chinese Politician. One of the most important leaders of the communist party, vice-Premier and Minister of Culture of China in the 60´s. Lu Ding Yi has drawn, paint brush, in Chinese calligraphy, “Ji Yu“, praise to Xia Zhi Gan for his charity works; Qin Shou Ou (1908-1993) Chinese Writer. A successful writer during war time, author of Qiu Haitang (“Begonia”); Guo Yi Wen (1899- ?) Chinese Poet, etc... Bearing to the right pages, opposite to the left pages authors´ written text, annotations in the hand of Xia Zhigan. VG £8000-12000 The present album provenance being from the art collection of Xia Zhigan (1917- ?), Chinese art collector and charitarian, member of the Xi Lin society. Former Shangbao journalist until 1949, he worked at the museum of historic literature in Shangai. Yu ShangWan (1897-1970) Chinese Theorist. In 1926 ShangWan was Professor at Shanghai GuangHua university. At that time and together with Xu ZhiMo they established New Moon bookstore, and translated several well-known western literature and drama.

A WWII Japanese officer's Gunto katana, the blade 68cm long with bronze tsuba and copper habaki, brown tuska ito and same fish skin tsuka with floral menuki, lacquered saya with bronze mounts and attached bead sageo of green hardstone, pearl, yellow metal and wood, kashira with floral decoration, calligraphy signatures to the tang, with a leather case CONDITION REPORT: Blade tarnished and the Ha (blade edge) shows a few little nicks (see images). Copper showing through the habaki. Small dent to the fuchi. Menuki surface to one side appears corroded. The Saya's surface is worn in sections, more so towards the top section, with the lacquer deteriorating. The saya appears slightly misshapen/dented to the tip. See further images. Leather case extensively worn.
A fine Chinese soapstone seal, Qianlong (1736-1795), with original Spink receipt, the square section seal carved from buff soapstone with reddish brown inclusions, surmounted by a kylin, the base inscribed 'The seal of your subject Ching Jung', the front with finely incised calligraphy, 'I wish I could bequeath to posterity some exquisite works of art and to my descendants the memory of a noble life by Shou Shih', 7.4cm. high.* Provenance: Spink and Son, 1948, purchase price £10.0.0, accompanied by the original receipt dated 21 July 1948.** Condition: Good condition. Minor chips to corners and edges, small chip to tail of kylin. Good patina.
An antique Chinese watercolour on silk of a bird, probably 19th century, the white feathered bird perched upon a peony branch, signed with four red seal marks and inscribed with black calligraphy, lined black border, 25½ x 16 3/8in. (64.75 x 41.5cm.), in a modern giltwood frame with bevelled mount.* Condition: Colours bright. Some sooty dirty marks and small scuffs visible to silk and it has been rolled at some time - it is a little cockled and there are some small vertical crease marks and some light horizontal crease marks to the centre areas from that rolling. A line of spot spill marks visible at a diagonal across the upper third of the painting - there are signs that an attempt has been made to restore these at some time, leaving feint, slightly darker-than-background marks around the spot marks. Two small patches of damage to the surface of the silk at lower centre right margin and a few dirty marks to silk at lower right corner.
AN UNUSUAL JAPANESE BAMBOO SAKE BOTTLE, TOKURI MEIJI 1868-1912 Modelled as a cylindrical water bucket and carved with magnolia buds and flowers, with calligraphy and three seal marks to the side and a painted inscription underneath reading 'Made by Rodo from a pattern designed by Sodo', 27cm. Provenance: from the collection of Professor J Norman Collie, FRS (1859-1942) and thence by descent. See Sotheby's London, 19th-20th March 1990, lot 123, for a related sake bottle carved as a water bucket with a fish and terrapin amongst lotus leaves. The inscription underneath may refer to a woodblock print designed by Kawarazaki Shodo (1889-1973).
A JAPANESE SCROLL PAINTING BY TOMISHIGE TOJO, KAKEMONO TAISHO 1912-1926 In ink on silk and depicting the moon emerging from behind clouds in a misty sky, with a line of calligraphy reading Kasumi hatsu tsuki (first moon), and a red seal mark for Tomishige Tojo, with a wood tomobako box bearing the title, signature and dating for Taisho 11 (1922), 32cm x 57cm. Provenance: a Spanish private collection, Madrid, purchased from Gregg Baker Asian Art, London, 27th November 2002. A copy of the original invoice is available.

TWO PANELS OF CHINESE CALLIGRAPHY AND ONE COUPLET 20TH CENTURY Ink on paper, 90cm x 30cm, 68cm x 42cm, 138cm x 35cm, 139cm x 35cm. (4) Provenance: from the collection of Lin Wen Zhi (d.1994) acquired in the 1950s and thence by descent. Lin was the oldest son of a wealthy and influential family, he studied at the University of Shanghai during the 1920s, he was sent from Shanghai to Singapore to help in his uncle's business. After the Second World War, he went on to start his own businesses, then he re-established the family tea business in his late 70s.
A RARE CHINESE BLUE AND WHITE INSCRIBED 'BIRTHDAY' DISH DATED 1594 Painted with two phoenix against a ground of peony flowerheads and scrolling leaves arranged around a central roundel with a single character ri, the reverse with three lion dogs and brocade balls to the cavetto and with seven lines of calligraphy to the base, 30.4cm. The inscription to the base says that is was commissioned by Mrs Xiong. It celebrates their three sons, the eldest of whom married into the Imperial House. It goes on to say that it was made in the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory on an auspicious day in the fourth moon of the twenty second year of the reign of the Emperor Wanli of the Great Ming Dynasty, which corresponds to February / March 1594. KANG YOU WEI (1858-1927) COUPLET IN RUNNING SCRIPT A Chinese scroll of calligraphy, ink on paper, the couplet reads shan rong qian zhong shi chuan liu yi mo yun, signed by Kang You Wei with two artist's seals, 142cm x 38cm. AFTER LENG MEI (19TH CENTURY) LADY GONG SUN'S SWORD DANCE A Chinese scroll painting, ink and colour on silk, signed Dong Ming Leng Mei zhi, and one illegible seal, 63cm x 30cm. Provenance: from an English private collection, acquired c.1999 with a label which reads Christie's 24 June 1999, lot 328. Lady Gong Sun's inventive sword dances in the Kaiyuan reign (713-741) of the Tang dynasty inspired the cursive calligraphy of Zhang Xu (c.675-741) and poetry of Du Fu (712-770). Wu Dao Zi (680-750), the great master of figure painting, was similarly inspired by the sword dance of General Pei. GUO MO RUO (1892-1978) CALLIGRAPHY IN RUNNING SCRIPT A hanging scroll of Chinese calligraphy, ink on paper, inscribed and signed Guo Mo Ruo with one artist's seal, together with another painting of swallows, 63.5cm x 31.5cm. (2) Provenance: from a private collection, the calligraphy was a gift to the current owner's father, Li Bo Yan (1913-1983), by the artist, in appreciation for his help and support given to him during the Chinese Civil War. Li Bo Yan was born in Beijing, after his graduation from Yan Jing University, he became the Vice Principle at the School of Classical Theatrical Art, and was friends of great Beijing Opera stars like Mei Lan Fang. From 1937 to 1943, he joined the Chinese Government Foreign Service as a diplomat, first as chancellor in Poland and then as attaché in Turkey.
