ATTRIBUTED TO ZHAO MENGFU (YUAN/MING DYNASTY)RIDER AND HIS SERVANTSA Chinese painting, ink and colour on silk, depicting a figure on horseback accompanied by two servants, one of whom carries two boxes, with an artist’s seal which reads Zhao Shi Zi Ang (Zhao Mengfu, court painter under the Yuan dynasty), 33cm high, 51cm wide.Provenance: from the collection of Adolphe Stoclet, 1871-1949.Exhibited: Peintures chinoises anciennes, Paris, Musée Cernuschi, 1912, no.130.Published: Georges A Salles and Daisy Lion-Goldschmidt, Adolphe Stoclet Collection (part I), Brussels, 1956, pp.410-411.Zhao Mengfu (1254–1322) was a Chinese scholar, painter and calligrapher during the Yuan dynasty. He was a native of Wuxing and has been honoured as an early master within the tradition of the literati painters who sought personal expression rather than the representation of nature. In calligraphy, Zhao Mengfu rejected the brushwork of his era in favour of the cruder style of the Jin and Tang dynasties. In his early years, Zhao Mengfu studied the style of the Song dynasty emperor Gaozong, but later turned to the styles of Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi, in the end studying that of Li Yong. His regular script is considered one of the top four greatest in Chinese history. Georges A Salles and Daisy Lion-Goldschmidt, Adolphe Stoclet Collection (part I), Brussels, 1956年, 頁410-411。

Lot 511

A RARE CHINESE FAMILLE ROSE 'LONGEVITY' VASEYONGZHENG 1723-35The cylindrical body painted with roundels containing shou characters and stylised cranes on a pink and blue diaper ground divided by ruyi-head bands, with floral and geometric bands to the foot, shoulder and rim, with dragons and lotus flowerheads to the neck against a blue and white ground of scrolling branches, 40.3cm.The use of the crane together with the shou characters represents longevity and immortality. The crane is the symbol of immortality because its white feathers represent old age, and the ancient Chinese believed that it could live for 1000 years or more. The crane is also a symbol of high rank and represents the first rank for Chinese civil officials. The shou character is itself a symbol of longevity. It can be written in many ways, and calligraphy consisting of one hundred shou characters in different styles is often used as a birthday present for an older person. The decoration to the neck closely follows the painting on a vase from the Alfred Morrison collection, cf. Christie's, November 9th, 2004, lot 11, linking the present vase to the Yuanmingyuan, or the Old Summer Palace, and also the article 'Who Collects Yuanmingyuan?', which discusses the Fonthill Heirlooms.清雍正 粉彩開光錦地鶴壽延年紋瓶

In 1796, he returned to Britain and bought the estates of Newe. The company had, amongst other things, been appointed banker to the Government of Bombay. His nephew, Charles Forbes, the 1st Baronet, also went to India and joined the company, returning in 1810The subject of the painting is not clear: one possibility is the wisdom of King Solomon (Suleyman), who is often shown with attendant figures, sometimes winged, as well as divs (though the other beasts who normally surround him are absent here. Solomon himself is not usually winged, but on the other hand is usually bearded. Alternatively, in some respects it comprises elements of Shahnama illustrations of the court of Gayumarth, in which the first of the Persian kings sits elevated on a throne-like rock, dispensing wisdom, often with an assortment of human courtiers and divs or demons, as seen here (see for example a Mughal or Deccani depiction of the subject, dated circa 1600-10, Christie's, Islamic Art and Manuscripts, 14th October 2003, lot 148; subsequently with Francesca Galloway, Indian Miniatures, 2005, pp. 14-15, no. 5). However, the elevated figure in our painting has both wings, and is beardless and perhaps female; in addition, Gayumarth is usually shown seated on a tiger skin. The calligraphy on the reverse is from a manuscript of poetry with the unidentified text in mathnavi form. The passage relates to the reply of the beloved to the lover, with the heading in red reading, 'The reply from the lips of the beloved'.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: RR This lot is subject to import restrictions when shipped to the United States. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

WU HUFAN (1894 - 1968) AN ALBUM OF LEAVES OF LANDSCAPE PAINTING WITH CALLIGRAPHY, 1916.  Landscape painting with calligraphy. Ink on paper, album leaves, signed, dated 1916, with two seals of artist. Translation of the poems inside of the album: 1.  Standing in the quietness of the mountains in springtime. Although frost still covers the grass new shoots are coming soon. Suddenly the light is shining through the forest and the moment of spring is here. 2.  Getting intoxicated when enjoying the drinking, laughing while without worrying. The time shared with a friend but now he is far away and only letters can be read. 3. The two pine trees straight to the heaven, and the roots down to the deep earth. Only the ‘earthen dragon’ will know the height of the trees. 4.  The only person in the world who knows about the dragon is he daring to defy him. The two cypresses are facing each other, as solemn as giants, and the dragon is singing in the wind and rain, and the mountain is standing in the snow and frost. 5. The night rain on Xiaoxiang river, the dark sky, the rain flying fast, my boat floating and all seems so surreal. Xiaoxiang river moving as strong as a dragon, and dark clouds cover the mountain. 6.  The ears are already familiar with the sounds of the rivers and lakes, life is full of passions but also worries. White hair is full of grey at mid-night when the moon light shines.
