MICHEL MARTINEAU. Botanical prints after originals by Michel Martineau included in 'Flowers from the Gardens of Napoleon on St. Helena Island'. Each titled within the print & further signed & numbered in pencil. Note: Michel Martineau has been the French Consul on St. Helena since 1995 & lives in Longwood House, once occupied by Napoleon. He has recently been responsible for arranging the extensive restoration of much of the original furniture in the house. These prints were gifted by Michel Martineau to the Vendor. A collection of Neolithic tools from the Leonard Newton Collection, including a collection of 9 Kintampo Neolithic items that were found and collected in the field during botanical fieldwork when Leonard Newton worked in Ghana, they feature in an article in the paper on the Kintampo Neolithic titled A Newly Discovered Site For The Kintampo 'Neolithic’ Cultural Tradition Near Kumasi, together with 5 Discoid Scrapers (Neolithic found in Kenya), various Obsidian blades / points, Obsidian Lunates (Neolithic, Kenya) plus other items including 8 large Palaeolithic hand tools c.500,000 BC used by the Homo erectus in Kenya, largest 25cm, smallest 12cmQty: (a carton )NOTESMany of the items were found in the course of some botanical field work on a granite outcrop near Kumasi Airport, several artificial holes and grooves on the exposed rock surfaces were spotted , and a number of artefacts were found lying around. The Kintampo were a Neolithic culture c.3500 years ago.

Collected in Latine, by Dr. Martin Blochwich, Physician Ordinary of Oshatin. Translated for the benefit of all, and recommended by the Royal Society, London, Printed for Tho. Sawbridge, and to be sold by H. Brome at the Gun at the West End of St. Pauls, 1670, [12], 230, title with faint red ruling, ink signature of Charles Walmesley, dated 1799 to front endpaper, and armorial bookplate to front pastedown, small rust mark to K11 (page 215/16), touching one letter, L5 with minor loss to upper portion of blank fore-edge, not affecting text, contemporary plain sheep, with morocco spine label, rubbed and a little wear with joints partially cracked, later leather repair to head of spine, 12moQty: (1)NOTESWing B3200; Wellcome II, 181; Krivatsy 1386. German physician Martin Blochwitz's Anatomy of the Elder was first translated into English by the Scottish physician Christopher Irvine in 1655, and was written as a practical guide for provincial doctors, beginning with botanical identification, and the preparation of remedies, and finishing with treatments for a variety of illnesses. The preface by the printer refers to the usefulness of the present work in the aftermath of the Great Plague, as well as the Fire of London, stating that the re-issue of this work brings 'a new sight of that translation, which, with many other things of great value, seem'd lately buried in the rubbish of our cities ruines... conducing to the Service of my Countrymen; and hope that this second appearance of so useful a Piece will be no less acceptable to them, than the first.'
