HxW approx.: 53/42 cm. Heavy traces of age, partially glued with passepartout or with residues of former mounting.
India.- Company School (19th century) A pair of botanical studies, including a chilli plant, the other identified in Nasta'līq script in the lower right, opaque pigments and watercolour, both on laid paper with partial indistinct watermarks, mounted on paper supports, each approx. 360 x 205 mm (14 1/8 x 8 1/8 in), both affixed onto album leaf, old folds, small losses and creases, light surface dirt, unframed, [probably early to mid-19th century) (2)Provenance:Probably acquired by John Murray III (1808-1892)*** For similar, slightly earlier examples, see the now disbound group of 118 Company School works on paper from the collection of the 6th Earl of Torrington, notably the pair sold from the Carlton Rochell Collection (see Sotheby's, 27th October 2021, lot 25).
Indo-China.- Straits School (19th century) Five botanical studies, including a cinnamon plant and Chinese snowball, all with Chinese inscription identifying the plants below, watercolour and gouache, on I. Taylor wove paper, each sheet approx. 420 x 545 mm (16 1/2 x 21 1/2 in), neatly tipped onto album leaves, some tears, nicks and surface dirt, some spotting and browning, one inscribed in pencil 'John Murray', all unframed, [mid 19th century] (5) Provenance: Probably John Murray III (1808-1892) *** An unusual example of large-scale botanical studies by a Chinese artist showing the influence of Indian art produced by the "Company School" group of artists working for British patrons; a hybrid of Indo-Chinese influences. Comparative examples of Straits School botanical watercolours were sold from the Carlton Rochell Collection of Company School Paintings (see Sotheby's, An Indian Garden..., 27 October 2021, lots 27, 28, and 29).

An original vintage City of Birmingham illustrated map poster by W. H. Price, c.1949 - issued by the City of Birmingham Information Department, the central map with illustrated landmarks and portraits of notable figure's from the city's history, with a compass rose and city arms, bordered by pictorials of other famous landmarks including Bourneville, Aston Hall, Botanical Gardens and the County Cricket ground, plus the arms of the Lords of the Manor of Birmingham and its boundaries, 68 x 92.5cm., unglazed gold painted frame.* Condition: Paper with some toning throughout and slight fading, some insect holes around margins, a patch of thin white paint splashes to right hand side, a few scratches and small abrasions to surface of paper. A little cockling to the sheet. Fair to good overall.

Botany.- Linnaeus (Carl) Species plantarum, 2 vol., first edition, second issue with the three cancelled leaves E6, F5 & R2 in vol.1, lacking errata leaf, some light browning and marginal damp-stains, eighteenth century panelled calf, vol. 2 boards slightly bevelled due to damp, label peeling and a little toned generally, with a couple of small worm holes, [Hunt 548], Stockhom, L. Salvius, 1753; Genera Plantarum..., "sixth edition", title in red and black, lacking folding portrait frontispiece, contemporary boards ?rebacked, spine gilt with contrasting label, lightly scuffed, L. Salvius, Stockholm, 1764; and 4 others, 8vo (7)*** I. The classification of plants and the foundation of modern taxonomy. This was "the first work to account for all the kinds of plants then known for the world, to classify them according to a simple system [...] and to provide for each kind a name of two words. This addition of a binomial system of nomenclature [...] to the polynomial system has caused this work to be designated as the starting point for the modern nomenclature of ferns and flowering plants. Because of this, Species plantarum has become the most important single work in the world's botanical literature." Hunt
AN ENGLISH PORCELAIN BOTANICAL PART DESSERT-SERVICE, POSSIBLY MACHIN CIRCA 1835 Painted with panels of flower sprays within a blue, salmon pink and gilt 'moustache' border, comprising; An oval comport; A pair of sauce tureens, covers and stands; Three shaped square dishes; Four shaped oval dishes; A pair of shell shaped dishes; And six plates, iron-red pattern no. 611 Condition Report: Comport: damaged and restored with old metal pin holding it all together. The flower decoration in the well is almost entirely rubbed out.Sauce tureens: One lid with 4cm long hairline crack, one stand stained, the other cracked, one tureen with interior rim chip.Shaped square dishes: Light wear and knife scratches generally.Shaped oval dishes: Two cracked, all with light wear generally.Shell dishes: One a little stained and each with some light wear/enamel flakes and knife scratches.Six plates: All shows varying degrees of wear and have clearly had a lot more use than the serving dishes. One with rim chip, one cracked. All lightly stained and as a result don't 'ring' when tapped.Used country house condition. A SPODE 'STAFFORD FLOWERS' PART DINNER SERVICE MODERN Printed in colours and gilt, with botanical sprays, comprising; A shaped oval serving dish; A pair of vegetable tureens and covers; a sauce boat and stand; a shell shaped serving dish; An octagonal dish; A shaped oval serving dish; Two shaped square dishes or stands; A shaped square serving dish; Twelve breakfast bowls and plates; Twelve side plates; Twelve cheese or dessert plates; Twelve dinner plates and Twelve coffee cups and saucers; factory printed marks and titled to bases Condition Report: One breakfast plate has a very fine circular crack to the well and does not 'ring' as it should when struck. This is hardly discernible and cannot be seen with the naked eye on the other side of the plate. The service appears to have had hardly any use and there are no real signs of wear or obvious knife scratches. No further provenance information available.
