[Travel Journals] Victorian handwritten diaries of a voyage aboard the S.S. Warrior, S.S. Bladworth and the S.S. Good Hope in the years 1872/3 journeying to Calcutta and Capetown, journals kept by a doctor/passenger comprising 3 notebooks in which is detailed places visited, weather conditions, collecting of botanical specimens, sketching, playing games, other vessels encountered (including S.S. Oriental, The Windsor Castle, Bismarck, S.S. Danube etc) stowaways, a tom cat falling overboard, attending to the injuries of several "firemen" on board with fingers and toes which were crushed or sliced off, severe head injury, death of a passenger and baby, a knife fight, visit to bazaar, vendors selling fruit, cigars, little dogs "something between a Maltese and a French poodle". Comprising over 300 pages with descriptions of the other passengers & temperatures recorded.

A group of five early 19th century and Victorian manuscript and scrap albums, including: an album filled with manuscript writings in prose and verse, in various neat hands, including the work of poet Bernard Barton, Washington Irving, Charles Lamb, John Milton, William Cowper, and others, some dated 1820s/30s, with a few mounted original drawings and engravings, paper watermarked 'J Budgen 1823', stitching partially broken, and some leaves detached, original calf, spine crudely strengthened with fabric tape, 4to; a late 19th/early 20th century album of cuttings, photographs, original drawings and watercolours, printed souvenirs, etc., relating to the Hawkshaw family, including drawings and photographs of places in Norway, Baden, Baltic Sea, Cologne, Folkestone, Herefordshire, Ewelme, Kildare, Chester, disbound (but rear board extant), folio, plus another from the Hawkshaw family, filled with newspaper cuttings; and an album of engravings, including armorial and large format topographical and botanical engravings, with some newspapers laid in at rear, including The Malta Observer, 1859, and The Kelso Mail, 1860, original half vellum, worn, folio Sold with all faults, not subject to return. *East India Company. Autograph letter signed from Sir Evan Nepean as governor of Bombay to Sir Joseph Banks as president of the Royal Society, Malabar Point, 18 April 1814, single sheet of laid paper, written on both sides, faintly creased where folded, 22.8 x 18.6 cm, together with Nepean's autograph transcript of a letter from the inspector of forests concerning Malabar teak, single sheet of wove paper, written on one side only, creased where folded, 22.5 x 18.6 cm Nepean informs Banks of the recent arrival in India of a consignment of vines from Persia, which had been delayed at Bushire, and of the impending arrival in London of 'another valuable consignment ... the Bussorah Clover'. He also discusses the practicalities of sending Malabar teak seeds back to England via the Cape, and encloses his autograph transcript of a letter from 'the inspector of our forests' concerning the various species of Malabar teak. 'Bussorah' is the archaic spelling of Basra, modern-day Iraq. Nepean's appointment as governor of Bombay in 1812 allowed him to develop his botanical interests. He corresponded regularly with Banks and himself became a fellow of the Royal Society on his return to England in 1820. Provenance: Francis Edwards, July 1966 (typescript purchase note laid in). (2)

First edition of this remarkable ald lavishly illustrated collection of classical writings on agriculture and rural economy. The publication was edited by the Ditch lawyer and philologist Willem Goes (1611-1686) in partnership with Nicolas Rigault (1577-1654), who supplemented the texts with accurate notes and a very useful lexicon of terms used. A collection of early-to-mid 20th century maritime ephemera relating to cruise ships to include a collection of 1930s Ward Line ephemera including an Art Deco Ward Line Orient and Morrow Castle plan of passenger accommodations, a 1930s 'Mexico via Ward Line' pamphlet, a Ward Line 'The American's Glorious Trail in Cuba' 1929 booklet, 1934 lunch menu from the Oriente and a dinner menu from the following day, a photograph of the SS Oxford, a c1920s-30s Shaw Savill and Albion Line 'Visit to the Dutch West Indies Curacao', a collection of 1950s British India menus decorated with botanical studies, five 1939 HT Lancashire luncheon menus, an Art Deco menu from Bernstein's Fish Grotto in San Francisco, one of the steamer stops and a 1924 SS Jan Pieterszoon Coen passenger list.
Botanical Album. An album of botanical watercolours after William Curtis, circa 1800, 34 watercolours, on rectos only, each of a flowering plant, annotated beneath in contemporary manuscript (and some with pencil annotations to upper margin), paper watermarked J Whatman 1794, some toning and marks, several leaves with minor creasing and tears (with slight loss) to lower blank gutter, preliminary blank inscribed in early manuscript 'Elvi Tennant from her Mother Gertrude Tennant', endpapers sometime renewed, original half calf, soiled and edges a little worn, rebacked, 4to London society hostess Mrs. Gertrude Barbara Rich Tennant (1819-1918), was a life-long friend of Gustave Flaubert and patron of a wide circle artists and writers. She was widowed in her early fifties, and it was after her husband's death that she established a salon where she held court amongst the likes of William Gladstone, Benjamin Disraeli, Oscar Wilde, Mark Twain, Thomas Huxley, Anthony Trollope, Lord Alfred Tennyson, John Ruskin, George du Maurier, John Everett Millais, Henry James, and Robert Browning. One of her daughters, Dorothy, married the explorer Henry Morton Stanley, and another daughter, Eveleen, to whom this album is inscribed, married the spiritualist and classical scholar Frederic William Henry Myers. Two folio albums of natural history prints, botanical plates, and some watercolours, mostly late 18th century and early 19th century, containing approximately 250 prints and engravings (85 hand-coloured), including 12 early 19th century original watercolours of animals and flowers, 4 hand-coloured engraved plates from The Works of John Fothergill, 1784, 4 hand-coloured engraved plates of birds from Saverio Manetti, Ornithologia Methodice Digesta (1767-76), 4 hand-coloured engraved plates from the rare publication Speculum Linnaeanum, by George Shaw, 1788 (being the first part of two published, with plates including the Barbary Ape, the Maimon, the Grey Baboon and the White Eye-lid Monkey), a set of 12 small engravings titled A Book of Lions after Picart (an English reissue of the plates first published by Picart in 1729), a large etched plate of the Rana Piscatrix, the Toad-fish or Fishing Frogg (from Walter Charleton, Onomasticon Zoicon, 1668), etc., all mounted to album leaves (watermarked Curteis & Sons, C Taylor and other later 18th century watermarks), marbled boards with recent calf rebacks, folio (38 x 24 cm, 15 x 9.5 ins) The four plates from George Shaw's Speculum Linnaeanum, which are accompanied by the printed title, preliminary leaves and descriptive leaf for each plate, appears to be the first of the two parts published by Shaw, with the illustrations by James Sowerby, which is all that was published. The two parts contain a total of 8 plates of Apes, Monkeys and two of Bats. See Nissen ZBI 3836 and BM (Natural History) IV, page 1911. (2)

A collection of 90 hand-coloured engraved plates of plants and flowers from Plantae officinales oder Sammlung officineller Pflanzen, Dsseldorf, [1821-1828], 90 hand-coloured engravings only, on Whatman watermarked paper after A. Henry, of which 24 are conjoined along one edge, each with botanical name printed lower right, occasional minor marks and soiling, one or two sheets with a closed tear, folio (sheet size generally 49 x 30 cm, 19.25 x 11.75 ins or similar) Nissen BBI 1442. Second edition, greatly revised and expanded, of the most important scientific work completed in Brazil during the 17th century, which established the author, Piso, 'as one of the pioneers of tropical medicine' (DSB). The second part contains two works by Georg Markgraf, Tractatus topographicus et meteorologicus Brasiliae, and Commentarius de Brasiliensium et Chilensium indole et lingua, and the third part contains Historiae naturalis et medicae Indiae Orientalis libri sex, a treatise on the East Indies by Jacob de Bondt, and a further work by Piso himself on the Mantissa aromatica, neither of which appeared in the first edition published in 1648 as Historia naturalis Brasiliae. An early 19th Century Spode porcelain part dessert service, enamelled in colours with named botanical specimens, comprising - twelve square plates with indented corners, 8.25ins x 8.25ins, two-handled dish on foot, 14ins x 9ins x 5.25ins high, small circular sauce tureen and lid, with butterfly handles, 5.75ins diameter x 5.75ins high, and oval dish, 7.25ins x 7.25ins (all with factory marks - the oval dish with early impressed cross within circle)
China.- Abel (Clarke) Narrative of a Journey in the Interior of China..., first edition, 18 engraved plates by T.Fielding and others, all but 2 aquatint, one folding, 8 hand-coloured, and 4 folding engraved maps, wood-engraved illustrations, errata slip bound in, foxing, some offsetting to and from plates, staining to a few leaves and a couple of plates (mostly marginal), folding botanical plate stained and frayed at fore-edge with slight loss, chromolithographed bookplate of Canford Manor, contemporary sprinkled calf, spine gilt with morocco label, rubbed, [Hill 2; cf. Abbey, Travel 537 & Tooley 1, both second edition], 4to, 1818.⁂ The author was naturalist to Lord Amherst's embassy to China but the work also covers Java, Hong Kong, Manila and Saint Helena which were visited on the voyage, and includes botanical, zoological and geological plates.

This was "the first work to account for all the kinds of plants then known for the world, to classify them according to a simple system ... and to provide for each kind a name of two words. This addition of a binomial system of nomenclature ... to the polynomial system has caused this work to be designated as the starting point for the modern nomenclature of ferns and flowering plants. Because of this, Species plantarum has become the most important single work in the world's botanical literature." Hunt
Sowerby (James) English Botany, 36 vol. plus Index and 5 vol. Supplement, 2,995 hand-coloured engraved plates (of 2,998, lacking final 3 plates and accompanying text leaves), a few folding, occasional spotting or foxing, some vol. with light water-staining, mostly to lower (occasionally upper) margins, but occasionally heavier and affecting plates though often affected plates with just some cockling, original wrappers to supplementary vol. bound in at end of Supp. vol.5, uniform later brown half calf, t.e.g., others uncut, [Nissen BBI 2225; Henrey 1366-68], 8vo, 1790-1865.⁂ An almost complete set of this important botanical periodical. The missing 3 plates and the accompanying text leaves were issued in part 83 in June 1866, but Henrey says "Few copies of No.83 appear to exist. This number contains the description of plate 2995 (the plate having been published in No. 82) the descriptions and plates 2996-8, and the descriptions only of plate 2999." Our copy has all plates up to 2,995 and the wrappers for the first 82 supplements.
