A group of Cambrian (Swansea) pearlware botanical dishes c.1800-05, including three small plates and an oval dish probably painted by Thomas Pardoe with specimens of Four Leav'd Flax, Indian Pink, Branching Toad Flax and Borage Leaved Mullein, impressed 'SWANSEA' marks, and a pair of square dishes and a plate painted with Eastern Poppy, Althaea and Carnation within silver lustre borders, all titled to the reverse, some wear, 27cm max. Published by a Society of Gardeners, woodcut ornament on title of a male figure pursuing a tree-nymph, woodcut initial and head-piece, title a little soiled, folds, C1 torn along vertical fold, chipping along folds with some slight loss to lettering, unbound and stitched, creasing, extremities chipped, small 4to, for John Wilkinson near Charing-Cross; And Sold by the Booksellers of London and Westminster, 1732.*** A rare erotic prose work. All issues are rare, each with only a handful of copies on ESTC, this imprint with only two copies listed (The National Trust and Henry E. Huntington Library). Stretzer was known for his Merryland books in which he used topographic metaphors to described the female body. The present work by contrast focuses on the male member through an extended botanical metaphor. Another variant of this work was also printed in the same year, with the imprint Londoni: Impensis Georg. Bishop, 1598. Given the missing leaves, it is difficult to ascertain the variant, however, the collation appears to be the same as the Bollifant variant.Sold with all faults, not subject to return.

Shaped handle to the cylindrical body hand decorated with central armorial crest bearing the motto "Sola Virtus Invicta" (Only Courage is Invincible), the Howard family (Dukes of Norfolk) crest and coat of arms, supported by a lion and a unicorn. Scrolls and botanical detailing throughout. Underside with painted mark. Appears in good condition, some loss to decoration. Measures approx; 14cm tall.
