Titeleinfassung u. 142 Kupfertafeln (hiervon 2 kol. u. 5 gefalt.). Frankfurt a. M., Officina Bryana, 1626. 6 Bll. 142 Taf. 4°. Ex. Österr. Nationalbibl., BE.4.K.2). Botany - With engraved title border and 142 copper plates (of which 2 col. a. 5 folded). Half leather binding of the early 19th century with calico paper covers (slightly rubbed and scuffed, spine professionally restored). - Exceptionally rare, second edition enlarged by additional new plates. It is based on a collection of floral depictions that de Bry etched mostly after Vallet's "Le Jardin duroy" (1608), Besler's "Hortus Eystettensis" (1612) and de Passe's "Hortus floridus" (1614). - The publisher and engraver Johann Theodor de Bry was known for his richly illustrated, scientific publications as well as for the artistry unmatched at the time, which is impressively depicted in the present complete copy as well as one of the most influential works of the early Florilegia. - In the 17th century in particular, Florilegia were widespread and mainly comprised medical or botanical topics. With the focus on classification, especially in the case of botanical works, the focus was not on scientific use but on the need to depict the beauty and splendor of individual plants. In addition to native plants, rare and exotic plants were of particular interest. - According to the intention of the Florilegium, the plates following a two-page "Brevis descriptio" show carefully engraved floral compositions with exceedingly fine shading and virtuoso lighting. - Partly inaccurate pagination, on the collation of the plates: 2 unnum., num. 1-116, 1-22, of which 37 and 50 counted twice, 111 not counted, 53 & 54 as well as 115 & 116 reversed in order (for the exact collation see Nissen o. Graesse, plate 23, however, not counted twice as in Nissen and Graesse, instead of plate 23 the plate with the same motif. 123 (from the edition of 1641) is bound in, for the collation see Ex. Österr. Nationalbibl., BE.4.K.2). - The text ll. slightly browned and finger stained (the plates in the margins affected), title page. with handwritten ownership entry as well as small defect probably from removed seal, only a few ll. with small edge tears, joint slightly cracked (book block however firm). Altogether very well-preserved and rare copy, the nuanced engravings with a pronounced burr effect in colour saturated prints.

* BET LOW RSW ARSA RGI DLitt (SCOTTISH 1924 - 2007), UNTITLED mixed media on paper, signedframed and under glassimage size 47cm x 57cm, overall size 68cm x 78cm Note: Bet Low was a Scottish landscape and figurative painter whose career spanned the majority of the twentieth century. Her mystical and beguiling landscapes offer great insight into the career of this prolific artist. Born into impoverished conditions in Gourock, Low studied at the Glasgow School of Art during the Second World War before going on to study briefly under James Cowie at Hospitalfield House. Low had a great love of Scottish landscapes and they are a typical theme in her oeuvre - notably of Orkney where she spent numerous summers with her family in Hoy. By the 1960s her works moved further into abstraction, and she is best known for her works in this style. After her studies, Low co-founded the Clyde Group with J.D. Fergusson in 1942. With this group, Low co-organised Glasgow's first open air exhibition in 1956 at the Botanical Gardens. In 1963, she went on to open the New Charing Cross Gallery in Glasgow with John Taylor and Cyril Gerber, which received great critical acclaim for encouraging contemporary art in Scotland. Throughout her career she exhibited widely - including a retrospective of her work in 1985 at the Third Eye Centre (now the Centre for Contemporary Arts), and her work is held in numerous public and private collections.

A large Compton Pottery terracotta Snake Potearly 20th century stamped with workmans initials (old restorations) 70cm high The Compton Potters Art Guild was started by Mary Watts, the wife of G.F. Watts the Victorian allegorical painter. In 1895 work began on the Watts Mortuary Chapel.  Designed by Mary Watts, it was to be built from local clay by the villagers of Compton, near Godalming, Surrey. Mr and Mrs Watts were dedicated supporters of the growing    Home Arts and Industries Association, a voluntary movement launched by Earl Brownlow in 1885 to revive the dying art of handicraft among the working classes. The idea was that young uneducated artisans should have their eyes opened to the wonders of art. They would be rescued from idleness, gambling and drinking -so the notion ran- during long winter evenings. Uplifted and taught how to use their hands with skill they would acquire a hobby to be proud of and develop this hitherto unknown talent, where possible to professional standards. The Pottery Art Guild continued from strength to strength, winning medals at the Royal Botanical Society and the Home Arts' highest award, the gold cross.   Garden ornament, Planter, Urn

Heideloff (Victor) Ansichten des Herzoglich Württembergischen Landsitzes Hohenheim, first edition in original 6 parts, engraved hand-coloured plan and 37 fine hand-coloured aquatint plates, some light marginal marking or faint soiling but very clean generally, publisher's neat blindstamp to a few plate margins, original printed wrappers with printed labels to upper covers, part 6 with numbering altered by hand and with neatly repaired tear to head, part 1 with chipping and wear to spine and some staining and scuffing to covers, but a near-fine copy generally, preserved in custom drop-back box, [Bobins 1436], folio, Nuremberg, Johann Friedrich Frauenholz, 1795-1800.⁂ A superb copy of this series of views from the Duke of Württemberg's estate in Hohenheim, one of the rarest and most desirable German colour plate books on gardens. Charles Eugene, Duke of Württemberg (1728-1793), obtained the former manor of Bombast von Hohenheim for his mistress and later wife Franziska von Hohenheim in 1768. The estate was reconstructed along the lines of an English garden (one of the first in Germany) under the auspices of the court architect Reinhard F. Heinrich Fischer. Around 60 buildings, comprising follies and monuments in Baroque and antique styles, were added to the complex before the duke's death in 1793. Though much of the estate fell into disrepair, several of the buildings were ultimately preserved and the site now houses the botanical gardens of the University of Hohenheim. This appears to be the only complete copy to appear at auction, the last near-complete example being one with the plan and first 23 plates that was sold at Sotheby's in 1965.

Henri Rousseau (1844 – 1910), often referred to as "Le Douanier" (the customs officer), was a French painter known for his distinctive and imaginative style. He is celebrated for his dreamlike and fantastical paintings that often depict lush jungles, exotic animals, and mysterious scenes. Despite his lack of formal artistic training, Rousseau's work had a significant influence on modern art.Key aspects of Henri Rousseau's life and work include:1. **Self-Taught Artist:** Rousseau began painting as a hobby while working as a customs officer in Paris. He had no formal art education, and much of his technique was self-taught. This contributed to his unique and unconventional style.2. **Primitivism and Naïve Art:** Rousseau's work is often associated with primitivism and naïve art, which emphasize simplicity, bold colors, and a childlike perspective. His lack of formal training led to an uninhibited and original approach to painting.3. **Exotic Landscapes:** Rousseau is best known for his lush jungle scenes, even though he had never visited the tropics. His imagination and sources like botanical gardens and illustrated books inspired his depictions of exotic flora and fauna.4. **Dreamlike Quality:** Many of Rousseau's paintings have a dreamlike quality, blurring the line between reality and fantasy. His compositions often feature juxtapositions of different elements, creating a sense of mystery and wonder.5. **Portraits and Landscapes:** In addition to jungle scenes, Rousseau also painted portraits and landscapes. His portraits often exhibit a similar naïve style, with subjects posing in a straightforward manner against imaginative backgrounds.6. **Criticism and Recognition:** Rousseau faced criticism from the art establishment during his lifetime due to his unconventional approach.
