BOTANICAL INTEREST: A COLLECTION OF GLASS PHOTOGRAPHIC PLATES DOCUMENTING SIR GEORGE TAYLOR'S 1939 HIMALAYAN EXPEDITION In 1939, Scottish botanist Sir George Taylor (15th Feb. 1904 - 13th November 1993) was invited by Major George (Geordie) Sherriff, whose family owned the Bowmore whisky distillery and was himself an enthusiastic plant collector with a particular interest in Himalayan species, to accompany him on an expedition to Sikkim, Nepal and Tibet. The plates here offered record many of the samples collected over the course of the expedition, the original film having been shot and pressed on the Tibetan plain prior to its dispatch to the Natural History Museum. Taylor went onto become Keeper of the Botany Department of the British Museum and was later appointed Director of Kew Gardens, receiving a knighthood for his services from Queen Elizabeth II in 1962. Six years later, he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of London.Provenance: gifted by Taylor directly to the vendor.

Priestley (Joseph, theologian and natural philosopher, isolated and identified seven gases including oxygen, 1733-1804) Autograph Letter signed to Dr [Benjamin Smith] Barton in Philadelphia, 3pp. with address panel, 4to, Northumberland, Pennsylvania, 16th June 1796, on the subject of the doctrine of phlogiston, botanical experiments, Barton's New Views of the Origins of the Tribes and Nations of America and glassware for chemical experiments, "I wrote to you some time ago... to request... you would be so good as to correct the press for a pamphlet I wished to publish on the subject of the doctrine of phlogiston. By this post I have sent the MS to Mr Dobson, with directions concerning it. I wish you would inform him that my name must be put in the title page as in my other publications, the running title should be The doctrine / of Phlogiston. In the MS I have used the following constructions d/d for dephlogisticated - p/d for phlogisticated - p/n for phlogiston. As you are a botanist, I wish you would get me... some seeds of the Epilobium hirsutum, as I wish to make some experiments upon it, and I cannot find it here. If I remember right, it flowers late in England. Is your ingenious paper on the Indian Antiquities printed and I ordered by Mr Russell some glass balls and tubes, to be made at Mr Nicholson's Manufactory, and to be joined by Mr Gatti the glass blower...", remains of red wax seal, Britannia watermark, split at central fold and professionally repaired, small hole where opened, folds, slightly browned.⁂ An important letter written from the town in Pennsylvania where Priestley and his wife Sarah lived after leaving England in 1794. The recipient, Benjamin Smith Barton (1766-1815) was one of the central figures in Philadelphia's scientific establishment and the author of several influential works including New Views of the Origin of the Tribes and Nations of America, 1798, to which Priestley alludes to in this letter. Priestley, a theologian and dissenting minister is generally credited with the discovery of oxygen, which he called 'dephlogisticated air'. There were, however, other claims to this discovery, notably that of Antoine Lavoisier. Priestley also discovered a number of other gases, but it was his determination to continue with the phlogiston theory or 'doctrine', namely that an element phlogiston was released during combustion, that left him somewhat isolated from the general scientific community. His political beliefs rather than his scientific standing had led to his self-imposed exile to America towards the end of his life.

Probert, A man who can speak of plants, 1995, E. C. Nelson, Dublin Provenance: Gifted by the artist to present ownerWendy Walsh was Ireland’s most prominent 20th century botanical artist. She remained an amateur artist until the mid-1970s when at the age of sixty she was commissioned to design floral stamps. The Gilbert Island stamps led to further projects for Irish stamps based on flora and fauna, which eventually led to the production of infamous book on horticulture. The Irish Florilegium – Wild and Garden Plants of Ireland was published in 1983, in which many of these watercolours were included. Lot 376

Sophie Coe Coverack (Cornwall) Charcoal on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by AOAP About I find inspiration almost anywhere but particularly in nature. Whether it's the power of the sea, wind through a grove of bamboo, sunlight through a canopy, the detail and structure of a leaf. There's so much beauty around us, both the big views and the details, I'm in awe of it. I try to capture the mood, the wonder, the feeling of being there, the elements perhaps less visible with a passing glance. I have always loved design and creating things, and sometimes work collaboratively to solve a design brief for artwork specific to a project. Mostly though I work alone inspired by the beauty in nature, often with my own creative enquires: How to express the rain? Or the wind as it blows sand along a sea drenched beach... as it makes botanical shadows dance on a wall. How to express the movement of a wave or the still timeless eternity of a mountain... there's inspiration everywhere. Sophie Coe was born in the UK in 1971. She studied fine art and architecture and worked in the UK, Asia and Australia, before settling in London in 2009. Fine art was always a passion which over the years grew to take over as a full-time occupation. Sophie studied fine art at the Slade in London but is largely self-taught. She works with charcoal, paint and various printmaking techniques to create images mostly inspired by nature. The freedom in her mark making gives immediacy and energy to her work, which itself exudes the simple calmness and beauty of the environment that inspired it. Having a background in architecture gives her an in-depth understanding of buildings, interiors, client/designer relationships and collaborative design. Commissioned pieces have ranged in scale from 60cm to 6.5m wide. Her work sells worldwide for both private collections and commercial interiors. She lives and works in Twickenham. Education 2007 The Slade, Summer Foundation in Fine Art 1995 Oxford Brookes University, Postgraduate Diploma in Architecture 1992 Oxford Brookes University, Bachelor of Arts (Architecture) Select Exhibitions 2023 The Summer Exhibition, Royal Academy. Lot 73

Cathy Tabbakh Cobalt Monstera, 2023 Acrylic on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by Verity Babbs About Cathy Tabbakh is a French painter working in the UK, with a passion for the mesmerising power of colour. She has exhibited in various galleries in Europe, the UK, USA and Australia and soon in Seoul, Korea. She holds degrees in Fashion Textile, Design and Fine Art (2011) and Art History and Archaeology (2017) both in Lyon. Cathy's work can be found in private collections worldwide and since 2021 as part of the Soho House Collection, with 2 paintings commissioned a displayed in Soho House Paris (2021), a commissioned floral ceramic sculpture displayed in Brighton Beach House (2022) and several works soon to be in High Road London in Chiswick, coming September 2023. Cathy's work collides imaginary forms with existing landscapes through the use of both architectural and botanical elements. Her compositions incorporate a hint of surrealism, as to alter presumed proportion, and a saturated colour palette to punctuate the contrast between shadow and light. Tabbakh's still-lifes show her desire to surround herself with green spaces combined with her love for architecture and interior design. She recently introduced ceramics into her practise, reflecting the colourful and bold style of her still-lifes.
