GORDON CHARLES GEORGE: (1833-1885) British Major General, known as Chinese Gordon. An unusual, lengthy illustrated autograph list, unsigned, two pages, 4to (neatly affixed together at the time of authorship), n.p. (Seychelles?), n.d. Gordon has penned a fascinating list of twelve requests for various animal and botanical samples, in part, `A tortoise egg in spirits. I do not want any nest broken open, but in the event of an egg not coming out I would like that egg in spirits....A small tortoise dead as it is in shell of egg. I do not want a tortoise killed, but in the event of one dead in shell I would like to have it in spirits.....Two or four little tortoises, of whose age there can be no doubt, two male, two female, in a box suitable for transport....At prashau are roots of Coco de Mer....I want one dug up and covered with matting....A portion of Mali Baba....with a few flowers....a fruit branch with its terminal germ, one not impregnated by Mali, packed in cask with bran or saw dust....` as well as several Coco de Mer cut in various ways as indicated by Gordon. Incorporated into the list are eight illustrations by Gordon which he provides to assist in the gathering of his requests. To the right of his list he has made an approximate calculation of the costs involved. Some light overall creasing and age wear, G. Chinese Gordon, a Christian Evangelist and considered somewhat eccentric even in his own lifetime, visited Praslin, the second biggest island in the Seychelles, and became convinced that it was the location of the original earthly paradise, The Garden of Eden.
