CHARLES ROBERT DARWIN (1808-1882), British naturalist, a collection of four hand written letters from 1868, one written and autographed by Charles Darwin and three written by Emma Darwin and believed signed by Charles Darwin. The four letters are written to Charles Caster Tait, a British naturalist and author of ‘The Birds of Portugal’, published by Witherby in 1924. The letter written by Charles is dated Feb 24th 1869 on Down, Bromley Kent headed paper, a letter dated Feb 2 is written by Emma, signed by Charles and includes a post script in Charles hand, the other two letters are dated April 18th and June 1st, are crossed out for Bromley and named for Beckenham and are written by Emma and believed signed by Charles. All four letters discuss Tait acquiring specimens of Drosophyllum Lusitanicum from Portugal for Darin and their delivery to him, the Feb 2nd letter includes notes on tailless dogs, the Feb 24th and April 18th letters also include notes on the horns of Merinos sheep. The April 18th letter opens with Darwin explaining that he is not very well following a fall from his horse and Darwin mentions his paper on climbing plants and a book which is has ordered. For a transcript of the letters please see below in the condition report. (4)PROVENANCE:William Caster Tait is one of four generations of the Tait family to have connections in Portugal. A nephew Mortimer C Tait translated sections of Luis Cameos 1572 work ‘Lusidas’ and another nephew, Alfred W Tait,  for recognition of his botanical work, was crated a Baron by King Carlos and has an iris named after him. His grandson Alan Tait, lived and worked in Oporto and ran the family shipping and travel company.  The letters are being sold by descendants of William Caster Tait. NOTES:It is thought that the interest in tailless dogs from William came from Darwins publication of ‘The Variations of Animals and Plants Under Domestication’ in 1868, a year before his correspondence with Darwin. It is plausible that Williams acquisition of a specimen of Drossophyllum Lusitanicum (flycatching plant) may have helped I his research for ‘Insectivorous Plants’ in 1875. 19th century copies of these four letters can be found in the larger collection of Charles Darwin correspondence at Cambridge University Library.

Bamford, 'Weston Hall, Northamptonshire - II: The Home of Sir Sacheverell and Lady Sitwell', Country Life, 29 January 1976, p. 235.F. Sitwell, Weston Hall, Towchester, Northamptonshire: A Brief Guide, Northampton, 1993, p. 7.Catalogue Note:The Water Lily (or Nelumbium Nucifera) pattern from the 'Darwin Service' was designed in 1806, and the 'Brown Water Lily' earthenware service was made during a three year period from 1808-1811 by Wedgwood. It was probably the first time that the Wedgwood factories had employed the technique of under glaze printing and used specific botanical images derived from prints in the Botanist's Repository and the Botanical Magazine (1803-1806). The original brown print pattern was made for the naturalist Charles Darwin's parents, Robert and Susannah Darwin of Shrewsbury. This service, which Susannah purchased from her brother, Josiah Wedgwood II (1769-1843), was a wedding gift to Charles (1809-82), and his wife (and cousin), Emma (née Wedgwood). A large part of this dinner service is at Darwin's former home, Down House, Kent; a single dinner plate is in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge (C.3-1988). The blue printed design, as found on the present dinner service, was conceived in 1806, introduced in 1811 and manufactured in quantity between 1811 and 1845.It is perhaps due to the friendship that existed between , Mary Heber (d. 1809), at Weston Hall, and the eminent naturalist and botanist Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1830), and his wife, that the Water Lily dinner service was acquired and kept at Weston. Sir Joseph sailed with Captain Cook on the Endeavour in 1768 and visited Tahiti, Australia, New Guinea and the Malay States. The specimens collected by Banks and the Swedish botanist, Daniel Charles Solander, were studied on the Endeavour by the botanical illustrator Sydney Parkinson. When the expedition returned to London in 1771, Banks employed five artists to create watercolours of all of Parkinson's drawings, and 18 engravers to create 743 copperplate line engravings from the completed watercolours at a considerable cost. It is said that the design for the water lilies on the service was taken from one growing in a pond in Lord Greville's garden in Paddington- upon seeing the flower Banks is said to have proclaimed that he 'had never seen a better water lily, even in the wild'.Banks, President of the Royal Society, who was friendly with Wedgwood, made regular visits to Weston Hall; in the expectation of one such visit, Mary noted that she must buy some Barbados ginger, 'to be had in powder at Apothecaries' Hall at 2s 4d per pound. Sir J. Banks takes a quarter of an ounce every morning at Breakfast' (F. Bamford, 'Weston Hall, Northamptonshire - II: The Home of Sir Sacheverell and Lady Sitwell', Country Life, 29 January 1976, p. 235). It is thus possible that the present lot was gifted to Mary Heber prior to her death in 1809 and later added to or some items bought as replacements.Condition Report: An oval soup tureen, cover and stand: the tureen is crackedA pair of shaped rectangular soup tureens, covers and stands: both stands are cracked and one tureen is cracked and gluedA pair of shaped rectangular vegetable tureens: One cracked, both missing coversA shaped rectangular meat dish with gravy well: one of the feet is chipped offAn oval vegetable tureen and stand: one handle has been often gluedThree oval serving dishes in various sizes: The smallest with a rim chipAn oval dish and divider: the vegetable divider is heavily stained and the dish is cracked and rivettedThree various vegetable tureens and covers: One tureen is cracked and rivetted and one is cracked and stainedFour assorted covers for vegetable tureens without base: One crackedFour various covers for sauce tureens: one crackedA pair of sauce tureens, ladles, covers and stands: One tureen is stained, one ladle is restoredFourteen custard cups and thirteen covers: several are stained, two have had the handles broken offEight small assorted serving dishes or sauce tureen stands: Two are cracked and one chippedTwenty-seven various soup plates: Four are cracked and chipped, some staining from age and useTwenty-two dinner plates: only two are undamagedfour breakfast plates: two are damageslarge punch bowl, 55.5cm diameter: cracked and scratchedGeneral condition: The service has been extensively used Condition Report Disclaimer

Hale, 1841.  2 volumes in one, 8vo (225 x 135 mm). 24 chromolithographs, one folding engraving, 9 in-text woodcuts. (Spotting throughout.) Crosby (early signature).  FIRST EDITION of both volumes of Mattson's work, a major advance in practical medicine. Mattson was a Physician to the Reformed Boston Dispensary, a Lecturer on Physiology, and the Practice of Medicine. In this work, he broke with Thomsonian medicine, popular in the 19th-century, which focused on ridding the body of toxins through natural herbal remedies, instead presenting a more accurate and well-researched treatise, considered superior to previous publications regarding botanical approaches to medicine. Of the many illustrations throughout are chromolithographs depicting plants or plant parts, and a folding double plate engraving of the human skeleton, and woodcuts of various parts of human anatomy. [Laid in:] Several leaves of manuscript notes, comprising formulas for cures using plant material.    Selections from the Property of Dr. Eugene Vigil, Antiquariat BotanicumFor condition inquiries please contact lesliewinter@hindmanauctions.com

Woodcut title with a Garden of Eden scene signed "A Switzer" (remargined with minor losses); woodcut portrait; one full-page garden design woodcut; 109 full-page woodcuts, one small orchard plan woodcut; one small woodcut of tools and methods of grafting. (Index leaves laid in at end, a few leaves supplied, a few leaves remargined or repaired, some browning or soiling). Contemporary blind-tooled calf gilt, red morocco lettering-piece gilt (rebacked, some light wear).  FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST IMPORTANT ENGLISH TREATISE ON HORTICULTURE, PRESUMABLY SIGNED BY JOHN PARKINSONParkinson was apothecary to James I, and later Royal Botanist to Charles I. He was a founding member of the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries in December 1617. One of the most eminent gardeners of the day, he kept a botanical garden at Long Acre in Covent Garden, close to present-day Trafalgar Square.   The presumed signatures of Parkinson occur on the verso of the engraved title (along with the note "Natury Secretarie"), and on the dedication leaf.   Parkinson commissioned specially cut woodblocks copied from drawings in other Latin herbals for his work, rather than rely on specialist printers who owned a set of illustrations to be used in multiple works.   "Since each block was the size of a full page and contained images of up to ten plants, the entire block had to be cut again if there were any mistakes...His books of plants would be the last to appear with wooden cuts, soon to be replaced by copperplate engravings...Yet the illustrations in the Paradisus are part of its charms" (A. Parkinson Nature's Alchemist, p.105). his work remains one of the best single sources of information on early 17th-century gardening practices and styles in England, "in such a delightful, homey style that gardeners cherish it to the present day" (Hunt).   Henrey 282; Hunt 215; Nissen BBI 1489; Pritzel 6933.  Selections from the Property of Dr. Eugene Vigil, Antiquariat BotanicumFor condition inquiries please contact lesliewinter@hindmanauctions.com
