'This journey was made by M.E.W., W.E.W., and H.W. to see something of the countries and Mission work in the province of Szechuan (West China) and in Japan'. original typescript on rectos of 113 leaves, 3 part titles, few diagrammatic sketches, headings & dates in red, contemp. cloth, 4to. (1914). * v. good comment & observations; outward voyage Gibraltar, Algiers, Italy, Suez, Aden, Colombo, Penang, Singapore, Java, Sumatra & Hong Kong (on N. German Lloyd liner); then Shanghai, Hankow (etc.) - good riverboat descriptions, then extraordinary 14 day chair journey Wanhsien to Paoning; botanical & medical observations, as well as descriptions of various mission stations visited & personnel met (CMS. & China Inland Mission); Japan included Nagasaki, Kobe, Tokyo, Yokohama & Kyoto, also Korea; returning to Pekin, followed by the 10 day Trans-Siberian rail journey to Moscow. A Late 17th Century Carved Oak Coffer. The frieze rail carved with initials CS and date 1698 defined against a pitted ground and flanked by foliate S-scrolls. The central panel ornamented with geometric cushion front mouldings, between two carved botanical side panels emblazoned with flowering plants. The muntins & stiles with zig-zagged punchwork running down the channel moulding. The interior fitted with a lidded candle box. 24 ins (61 cms) high, 51 ins (130 cms) wide, 20 ins (51 cms) deep.*
