He submitted 5 works to the Dudley Gallery in 1868, the Art Journal noting that Bateman's work saw a shift in emphasis from the Ruskin-esque mantra of 'close to nature', using medieval motifs 'as an escape from naturalism'1 The son of a horticulturalist, Bateman's work was often populated with architectural and botanical themes. Christopher Wood describes the style of his work as 'compounded of Burne-Jones and eclectic study of early Italian Renaissance painters'2.Bateman's Pool of Bethesda (1876) is in the collection of the Yale Center for British Art, and his work has featured in various exhibitions such as The Last Romantics (Barbican Art Gallery, London, 1989) and Pre-Raphaelite Vision (Tate London, 2004)1Christopher Newall, catalogue entry for The Three Ravens, exhibition catalogue for Pre-Raphaelite Vision, London, 2004, p. 235.2Christopher Wood, Dictionary of Victorian Painters, Woodbridge, 1995, p.42.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lumsden, black morocco title labels on spines, t.e.g., elephant folio (700 x 550mm.), Alecto Historical Editions, 1980-1990Footnotes:THE FIRST COMPLETE PUBLICATION OF THE MAGNIFICENT BOTANICAL ENGRAVINGS, TAKEN FROM THE ORIGINAL DRAWINGS MADE BY SYDNEY PARKINSON DURING CAPTAIN COOK'S FIRST VOYAGE - IN A RARE FULLY BOUND FORMAT.Between 1771 and 1784, Joseph Banks both bankrolled and supervised the meticulous production of 743 copperplate images. A set of proofs was printed in 1784 but, probably due to the huge expense of the project, no formal publication of the set was made in Banks' lifetime. Shortly before his death in 1820 he bequeathed the plates to the British Museum. In 1905 a limited edition of the Australian plant images was issued, printing the plates from lithographic stones prepared from the eighteenth century proofs, and in 1973 a selection of thirty plates etched in black and white. This Alecto edition, ten years in the making, was the first time the whole set appeared printed from the original copperplates, and has been described as the most important achievement in the graphic arts in the twentieth century. The plates are printed in colours à la poupée, a process in which 'up to ten colours are worked directly into the single plate before each print is pulled, with additional water-colour touches in special cases' (Prospectus). This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A mumei wakizashi in buke-zukuri style koshirae with associated kuro-nuri saya and with two botanical menuki on the tsuka; the blade configuration honzukuri/fukura tsuku/chu-kissaki; nakago roughly ha-agari kuri-jiri with single, but enlarged, mekugi-ana; suji-chigai yasurime are apparent. Nagasa/ha watari about 44.2 cm; fitted with a ko-sukashi decorated tsuba, three seppa and a damaged habakiThe unsigned ko-sukashi decorated tsuba here appears to have little wear around the nakago-ana, implying perhaps an Edo Period date of manufacture. Interestingly, however, the single mon motif is a design from an earlier era [compare for example the Ko-Katchushi School tsuba with a middle Muromachi attribution, illustrated on page 48 of 'Early Japanese Sword Guards' by Masayuki Sasano]. Sukashi tsuba retained their popularity throughout the Tokugawa Shogunate, and Sasano san reminds us of Kyusaku Akiyama's story of Samurai, returning to their fiefs, presumably following Sankin Kotai in Edo, and showing off the latest designs from the Akasaka School to a captive audience.
A mumei wakizashi in damaged buke-zukuri style koshirae with kuro-nuri saya and tsuka decorated with two menuki [one botanical and the other a bird]; the blade configuration honzukuri/fukura-tsuku/chu-kissaki; the nakago roughly ha-agari kuri-jiri with single mekugi-ana and apparent suji-chigai yasurime obscured by rust; nagasa/ha watari about 43.9 cm.Condition Report: Scabbard- overall losses to the lacquer work, split to entry apertureHandle-long crack to shagreenBlade not signed.multiple surface scratching, some pitting, slight nick to the end curve, five notable scores to blade, two/three nicks to the edge
