In 1648 he took up the first chair of chemistry in Paris at the Jardin du Roi. There he gave the first chemistry lectures in France and at the same time was in charge of the botanical garden. He was also a pioneer in crystallography and its taxonomy. He divided crystals into hexagonal, cubic, pentagonal, octahedral and rhombic. A Rockingham porcelain part tea set, each piece hand painted with botanical study and with gilt chain link decoration, comprising 9 saucers, 10 tea cups, 6 coffee cups, 2 bread plates, cream jug, sucrier and slop bowl, pattern number 578, printed griffin mark, Rockingham Works, BrameldCondition report: See images for detailed images of the cream jug which is absent in the main picture. Three tea cups have large hairline cracks, a further two tea cups have small hairline cracks by the handle. None of the cups have printed marks. Three of the six coffee cups have hairline cracks issuing from the rim, 2 - 4cm in length, the other three are in good condition. None of the coffee cups have printed marks. The nine saucers are in good condition and ring out nicely, all saucers have factory printed Griffin marks. The two bread plates are in good condition. The cream /milk jug has no obvious chips or cracks but the glaze is crazed and discoloured in areas. The slop bowl has large open cracks, the bottom has fallen out and has a rivet repair. The sucrier lid has fine hairline cracks, the bowl has extensive cracks and glued repairs throughout.

The plates in the present work are of zoological, botanical and ethnographic interest.
