A set of twelve botanical silver spoons, Sheffield 1981, approx. 9.795 ozt, cased

[Lot of 2 - Flowers] Lot of two botanical engravings from this scarce, monumental work. The plates were produced in a combination of etching and mezzotint engraving. This complex printing process, invented by Johann Teyler in the Netherlands around 1688, made possible delicate lines and a very fine grain. The addition of hand coloring brought about unusual and subtle effects that make these beautiful plates very desirable. Includes plates 347 and 688.Weinmann’s major creation was Phytanthoza iconographia (1737-1745), a great project that comprised eight folio volumes with more than a thousand engravings of several thousand plants. One of the artists Weinmann employed was Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708-1770) who would become one of the foremost botanical illustrators of the eighteenth century. The text was written by the Regensburg physician, Dr. Johann Georg Nicolaus Dieterichs. Phytanthoza iconographia was published in both Latin and German. Size varies slightly.A. N. 688 -- a. Nauwkeurige Beschryving der Aard-Gewassen, door Abraham Munting A beautiful example of the title page from the 1696 enlarged edition of Munting`s Nauwkeurige Beschryving Der Aard-Gewassen, a superbly illustrated botanical book of this period. The exquisite plate was drawn by J. Goeree (1670-1731) and published in Leiden by Pieter van der Aa and Francois Halma. The busy scene depicts an offering of fruit and plants to the gods with the assistance of cherubs. Below the ornately framed title are two cherubs with an open copy of the book. Surrounded by a very detailed and finely engraved border filled with fruits and vegetables, along with four classical figures. Beschrieben werden 150 Heilkräuter, jeweils mit einer Holzschnittabbildung, die seitenverkehrt nach der Schöffer-Ausgabe kopiert wurden. `Das wichtigste Merkmal dieser Ausgabe besteht aber darin, daß die deutschen Namensbezeichnungen in vielen Fällen von denjenigen der Mainzer Ausgabe abweichen, wie ja auch heute noch viele Kräuter in den einzelnen Gegenden Deutschlands verschieden benannt werden .. was seiner Ausgabe kulturhistorischen Wert verleiht` (Schreiber). Zugleich der älteste datierte Druck von Johann Petri . Er `besaß eine wesentlich leistungsfähigere Druckerei und entfaltete auch eine reichere Tätigkeit [als der Passauer Erstdrucker Benedikt Mayr]. Selten. - Der Verfasser Fabio Colonna (1567-1640), eigentlich ein gelernter Rechtsanwalt, widmete sein Leben ganz dem Studium der Heilpflanzen, nachdem er durch Dioscorides von der heilenden Wirkung des Baldrians erfahren hatte und mit diesem Mittel seine epileptischen Anfälle erfolgreich behandeln konnte. - Das vorliegende Werk beschreibt im ersten Teil die medizinische Wirkung von insgesamt 26 Pflanzen, wobei er sich auf antike Autoren stützt, dabei aber durchaus ein kritisches Auge behält. Der zweite Teil enthält weitere 11 Abbildungen (davon 2 mit Fischen). - Die schönen Illustrationen sind von Colonna selbst nach der Natur gezeichnet und auch radiert worden. Die Radiertechnik erlaubte es ihm, `to draw every line of the illustration exactly as he wished it to print, without the necessity of another hand to cut the printing surface. Jahrhunderts erschien in Lieferungen über einen Zeitraum von 12 Jahren. - T. F. L. Nees v. Esenbeck (1787-1837) war Apotheker und Professor für Pharmazie und Botanik in Leiden und Bonn. Er überarbeitete die ursprünglichen Texte von M. F. Weyhe, J. W. Wolter und P. W. Funke und setzte sie fort. Die fein kolorierten Abbildungen sind ein Meisterwerk des Zeichners Aimé Henry (vgl. Nissen S. 217), der neben der Tätigkeit als Lehrling bei Arnz die Malerakademie besuchte und sich zum Aquarellisten ausbilden ließ. `Die Tafeln wurden grösstenteils nach der Natur neu hergestellt, es sind gute Habitusbilder .. Als frühes und grosses lithographisches Werk sind sie auch für die Geschichte der naturwissenschaftlichen Abbildung von Interesse` (Schmid, Über alte Kräuterbücher, in: Schweizer Beiträge zur Buchkunde, 1939, S. 131f.). - Exemplar mit einem hs.
