Roscoe to the Duke of Gloucester...as stated in...the Third Report of the African Institution, 11pp., first edition, title browned, some spotting, final leaf laid down, disbound, George Ellerton, 1810 § Park (Mungo) Travels in the Interior Districts of Africa, second edition, half-title, stipple-engraved portrait, 3 folding engraved maps (one with routes supplied in red and blue) and 5 plates (2 botanical and folding), with the 2 engraved leaves of musical notation (not always found) bound with Postscript leaf following title, list of subscribers, light foxing and soiling, one plate a little damp-stained in corner, one map with tear repaired, contemporary half sheep, roan label, rubbed, split to lower joint, corners repaired, Printed by Bulmer and Co. for the Author, 1799; and a fifth edition of the last, 8vo & 4to (4)⁂ The African Institution was established in 1807 following the abolition of the slave trade in Britain, with the aim of creating a haven for freed slaves in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The Duke of Gloucester, nephew of George III, was the first President, and William Wilberforce one of its leaders. The abolitionist William Roscoe of Liverpool had proposed that trade with Africa would be the greatest benefit to promoting civilisation in Freetown but George Harrison advises caution. COPAC lists 3 copies of his pamphlet (BL, Newcastle University, and the Society of Friends).

HRH THE PRINCE OF WALESTHE HIGHGROVE FLORILEGIUM WATERCOLOURS DEPICTING PLANTS GROWN IN THE GARDEN AT HIGHGROVETHE Prince's Charities Foundation / Addison Publications Ltd, 2008-09. Two volumes, atlas folio (66.5 x 45.5 cms), limited edition number 93 of 175 copies SIGNED IN INK BY PRINCE CHARLES to his Preface in volume 1. In total there are 124 fine colour facsimile plates of botanical watercolours by Anne O'Connor, Beverly Allen, Josephine Elwes, Jenny Phillips, Sally Grosthwaite, Jill Coombs, and many others, each signed in pencil by the artist and with the plate and edition number in pencil over the embossed copyright blindstamp of A G Carrick Ltd to lower outer corner, the plates printed on American Cotton paper with the text on 'Somerset Bookwove', text decorations and endpaper pattern by Richard Shirley Smith. Finely bound in the original dark red quarter goatskin, gilt, by Stephen Conway after a design by James Brockman, with gilt hand-tooling by James and Stuart Brockman, dark green goatskin oval onlays to upper boards with gilt lettering and the Prince of Wales' feathers, dark red goatskin board fore-edges, hand-made marbled paper, block-edges speckled. A very fine and most handsome set of this magnificently-produced work (2)
* Anderson (Elizabeth Garrett, 1836-1917). Autograph letter signed, 'E. Garrett Anderson', 114a Harley Street, London, 26 November 1909, to a lady, Anderson informing her that there has been a suggestion that 'some members of the Ealing Branch might like to attend the meeting on Dec 4th... You will probably know who these ladies are & if it is not troubling you unduly we wd. ask you to send the enclosed notices [not present] to them' and further explaining, 'The spirit of the meeting is not one of hostility to the N.U. or the country but its object is simply to enable the members who disagree with the by election policy to decide whether they shd. resign or stay on & try & influence the opinion of the majority on this point', creasing to lower margin, written on first and fourth page of a bifolium, remains of former mounting to blank upper margin of fourth page, two pages, 8vo, together with Stopes (Marie, 1880-1958) , autograph postcard signed, 'M.C. Stopes', 14 Well Walk, Hampstead, no date, to an unidentified correspondent, 'I am v sorry I have no definite hour I can name. I shall probably be at the botanical dept. University College the greater part of Thursday, if you like to take the risk of finding me, but I cannot tie myself to an hour', a little creasing and with previous mounting remains to verso and resulting loss of name, address and postmarked stamp, plus a typed letter signed from 'Marie C. Stopes', Norbury Park, near Dorking, Surrey, 15 December 1934, to Mr Huntington expressing her shock at the news that Mr Grubb 'has passed away' and asking if Mrs Grubb is still alive, a little creasing, one page, 4to (Qty: 3)
