Commentarii in sex libros Pedacii Dioscoridis Anazarbei... de medica materia, Venice: Ex Officina Valgrisiana, 1565, woodcut printer`s device on title, full-page woodcut portrait within elaborate border on M6v, and over 900 large woodcuts of plants, herbs, animals, insects, and distillation prcesses, most of them by Giorgio Liberale and Wolfgang Meyerpeck, the majority filling three-quarters of the page, some soiling, pinhead wormholes and untidy early manuscript marks to title including ownership signature of Tho. Lewis dated 1663, repaired tears to three preliminaries running close to main text block and affecting some side-notes, last leaves somewhat soiled with final two leaves torn and repaired with significant loss, 17th-century blind-panelled reversed calf with later spine and repairs, thick folio (345 x 240mm) The botanical cuts first appeared in the 1562 Herbar (in Czech) and the 1563 Neu Kreuterbuch printed in Prague, but for this edition the scope was enlarged to include fine zoological cuts and genre scenes. Edwards (Sydenham). Insects by Sydenham Edwards, a late 18th or early 19th century manuscript notebook by Sydenham Edwards, containing 130 leaves of handwritten notes in dark brown ink, with find hand-coloured illustrations, almost certainly drawn from life, with later handwritten title at front ‘Insects by Sydenham Edwards, Given me by Mrs Edwards Sept. 1833. Edwd. E. Antrobus’, a.e.g., early 19th c. plum full morocco, titled in gilt to spine Insects, and with Sydenham Edwards lettered in gilt to foot of spine, rubbed to joints and extreme corners, 8vo (18.5 x 12 cm). Sydenham Edwards (1768-1819) was born in Usk, Monmouthshire, and when only eleven years old displayed his prodigious skills in draughtsmanship by copying plates from the Flora Londinensis. He was quickly apprenticed to William Curtis in London, and for twenty-seven years produced many of the drawings published in Curtis’ monthly Botanical Magazine. Edmund Edward Antrobus, of Bath Lodge, Trafalgar Square, was the son of a director of Coutts Bank, and a dealer in tea, with premises at 446 The Strand. (1)

Provenence: first work inscribed: “Laura Bradbury, Tenby, August 22nd 1887”. Laura Bradbury was the wife of William Bradbury, of London publishers Bradbury and Evans (later Bradbury and Agnew) and sister of Thomas Agnew of publishers Thomas Agnew & Sons. (2)

Temple of Flora, Or Garden of the Botanist, Poet, Painter and Philosopher, 1st ed., 1812, hand-coloured aquatint frontispiece, two engraved titles, 28 hand-finished colour mixed media plates, two uncoloured plates, mostly after Peter Henderson and Philip Reinagle, Stapelias plate with repaired marginal tear, one or two other leaves with repaired tear, occasional light spotting and stains, contemporary maroon morocco-backed boards, edges lightly rubbed, 4to. One of the greatest botanical books and the first separate quarto edition. Originally published as part of Thornton’s New Illustration of the Sexual System of Carolus von Linnaeus (1799-1807). Although few of the plates are of scientific interest, the stylised depictions with accompanying romantic, historical and allegorical text by Thornton achieved his aim of producing an unsurpassed botanical work, although financially ruinious due to the cost of the plates. Circle of George Engleheart, Portrait of `William Aiton Esqre. author of Hortus Kewensis`, shoulder length, 6.4cm x 5.3cm, oval. Titled verso. In a verre ŽglomisŽ slip and a black papier mache rectangular frame. From the portrait by George Engleheart in the collection of the Royal Botanic Garden, Kew (accession no. LO 001) William Aiton (1731-1793) was born near Hamilton in Scotland. Having been trained to the profession of a gardener, he travelled to London in 1754, and became assistant to Philip Miller, then superintendent of the Chelsea Physic Garden. In 1759 he was appointed director of the newly established botanical garden at Kew, where he remained until his death. He effected many improvements at the gardens, and in 1789 he published Hortus Kewensis, a catalogue of the plants cultivated there.
