19th century AD. A vellum scroll comprising three sheets joined together, bearing neat and regular lines of red and black inked script, together with associated images; the text includes prayers for barya and evil eye, and for Shotäläy and magical machination; the images represent a (partial) guardian angel; a picture of a figure with two birds, a sun and moon; and a crossed hand; the owner's names are given as Wällättä Maryam Beré and Beré Lämma.70 grams, 1.43m (56 1/4"). Ex central London gallery; previously in a UK private collection, acquired circa 1990; accompanied by a collector's cataloguing page. The prayers and text are Christian, and the demonology associated primarily with the Old Testament, such as the book of Enoch, referencing alternative names for God and the talismans for exorcising devils from those possessed. King Solomon's beheading of the demon blacksmith is central, the 'Net of Solomon' being a frequently cited prayer in such scrolls, along with Alexander the Great , and the Saints of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The sick looked upon such scrolls as it was believed that the images contained in them had healing powers. The scrolls were prepared by unordained clerics, or debatras, employed by Christian families, a practice which continued into the 20th century. Debatras were skilled at diagnosing the causes of illness, and treated them through scrolls such as that offered here, together with herbal and plant-based remedies; the images and prayers were believed to act on the spiritual source of the ailment, whilst the botanical remedies acted upon the physical symptoms. The scrolls covered the length of the afflicted person's body, providing preventative as well as curative protection and were often passed down through generations of the same family. The patients were often illiterate peasants, and the scrolls written in archaic Ge'ez, a liturgical language comprehended only by clerics; the debatras explained the prayers and the images to the sick. The images are designed to be mesmeric, the penetrating gaze of eyes from within the design giving them a sense of power. [No Reserve] Fine condition.

A Mughal pale green jade ewer and coverIndia, 18th centuryThe pear-shaped body rising from a short foot, carved in low relief with sprays of blossoming flowers surrounded by meandering leaf stems beneath a band of pendent leaves, with similar designs repeated on the domed cover surrounding a lotus-bud-shaped finial, the body with an integral straight spout. 15cm (6in) long.Footnotes:十八世紀 青白玉雕痕都斯坦式蓋壺Provenance: an important European private collection來源:歐洲重要私人收藏This elegant jade wine ewer is of a rare but known form. The Mughal Empire in India (1526-1857) left a legacy of high-quality worked jades. The Qianlong emperor greatly admired the so-called 'Hindustan' jades, and in 1768, he wrote the Tianzhu wuyindu kaoe, a scholarly text on the geography of Hindustan and the derivation of its name. The area he identified was in what is today India, with the city of Agra at its centre. During the eighteenth century, this area was part of the Mughal Empire and thus the jades from this region are today often referred to as 'Mughal' jades. The decoration of the present vessel may have been inspired by Emperor Jahangir's visit to the beautiful flower-filled valleys of Kashmir in 1620, which prompted the introduction of a new style of drawing on botanical designs.Compare with a related jade ewer, 17th/18th century, in the collection of the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in Exquisite Beauty - Islamic Jades, Taipei, 2007, pl.96. A related white jade wine flask, India, 18th century, was sold at Christie's London, 8 October 2015, lot 143. 143。For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
