A PAIR OF RIDGEWAY EARLY ENGLISH CHINA BOTANICAL DESSERT PLATES each painted in polychrome with a specimen flower 'Tulip' and 'Iris', the broad plain green border having an embossed and pierced edge embossed with vine leaves and rococo scrolls in buff and gilt, 8 7/8" diameter, red painted pattern number '230', circa 1803
A Meissen plate mid 18th century, moulded with the Gotzkowsky relief of four floral panels to the rim and a continuous garland to the well, painted in the botanical manner with specimens including tulip, narcissus, carnation and convolvulus, the rim with a narrow hatched gilt border, blue crossed swords mark, 24cm.
A Derby botanical oval dish c.1800, painted in pattern 197 with a specimen of Black Hellebore or Christmas Rose within a simple gilt rim, titled in blue to the underside, and an English porcelain plate painted with rose and chrysanthemum within a gilt and red grapevine border, minor faults, 27cm max. Three English porcelain botanical dishes 19th century, one Derby of shell shape and painted with a spray of Chinese Day-Lily, titled in iron red to the reverse, one untitled but painted with a spray of passionflower and with pierced handles, the last Davenport and painted with a fruiting nectarine branch, one broken and restuck, 30cm max. Attributed to James Buckman (1814-1884). A watercolour album of fungi, a collection of sixty numbered leaves with watercolours of fungi on rectos (plus one loosely inserted), some folding, many of the drawings annotated in pencil, with botanical names and places, chiefly Worcestershire (e.g. Nunnery Wood, The Holt, Henwick), several dated 1861 and one dated 1848, preliminary blank with newspaper cutting mounted with adhesive tape (offset to first two leaves) and pencil inscription above 'James Buckman 1814-1884', sheet size approximately 25.5 x 6.75cm (10 x 17ins), bound into near contemporary half calf gilt, spine label gilt lettered 'Fungi J. Buckman', extremities slightly rubbed, large 8vo James Buckman was professor of geology, botany and zoology at the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester from 1848 to 1863. He founded the college's botanical garden, and conducted a number of important botanical experiments, some of which were mentioned in Darwin's 'Origin of Species'. James Buckman was a friend of botanist Edwin Lees (1800-1887) who, with Buckman's encouragement, founded the Worcestershire Naturalists' Club. Lees proposed that the club compile a much-needed flora of the county, which was eventually published as 'The Botany of Worcestershire', and it was his suggestion that the Woolhope Naturalists' Field Club initiated in 1868 the annual fungus forays in Herefordshire for which it became nationally famous. An Essay Towards a Real Character, and a Philosophical Language, 1st edition, 1668, imprimatur leaf, title with engraved armorial, two full-page engraved plates (one folding), three engraved illustrations, two folding tables, title with repaired tear, occasional spotting and browning, imprimatur and title leaves with marginal chips and tears, later half vellum, light soiling, folio Wing 2196. John Wilkins (1614-1672) was a founder member of the Royal Society and one of the century's most influential thinkers. The present work, considered his greatest, an attempt to formulate a universal language. The zoological and botanical tables were compiled with the help of Francis Willughby and John Ray. (1)

An album of botanical watercolours, French Pyrenees, 1870s-1880s, approximately thirty-six watercolours of flowers, fruit, and birds, to rectos only, some depicting single specimens, others with a medley of nature's bounty, most captioned in pencil to lower margin, some dated and with places stated, e.g. Luchon, Pau, Biarritz, Pyrenees, many initialled 'E.B', several blank leaves at rear, some light toning, and one or two minor tears, sheet size 17.5 x 26.5cm (7 x 10.5ins), marbled endpapers, original sheep, a little rubbed and stained, 1.5" loss at foot of spine, upper cover gilt lettered 'Wild Flowers, E.B., 1880', oblong 8vo, together with another, smaller, album by the same artist, similarly bound and with identical lettering to upper cover, with calligraphic title-page 'Wild Flowers of Pau and the Pyrenees', containing fifty-three botanical watercolours, mostly to rectos, but a few on versos, sheet size 11 x 17.5cm (4.5 x 7ins) Provenance: Given to the vendor by Daphne Colvin, grand-daughter of the Colvins of Monkhams Hall, Essex, and niece of Forrester Farnell Colvin who married Isabella Bunberry, daughter of the Earl of Rathdonnell. Subjects include: passion flowers, hellebores, anemones, irises, poppies, tulip tree, aubergines, gentians, pomegranates, fungi, orchids, magnolia, and hibiscus. (2)
