D; G; MAG; BRI; FR; ET. HI; REX, rev. oval quartered shield of arms, . CHRISTO. AVSPICE. REGNO ., weight 29.78g (Brooker 258/-; Cooper dies XVI/XX; N.2195; S.2758). Toned, light flecking and tiny digs on obverse, well struck for this usually poor issue, small rim bruise on obverse, seemingly better struck than example with same obverse in the Brooker collection, horse and King with a neat portrait visible, otherwise a bold very fine and rare. A Nato size 180/96 smock combat jacket, London Scottish Officers No. 1 sash and a Skean Dhu inscribed "2CSM JF Archdale from the Ancients 1978" CONDITION REPORTS Not known if officers sash from 1978 no identifying marks at all. Skean Dhu plated mounts worn particularly around the inscription.

A colonial administrator who embodied the best traditions of the Service for practically the first half of the 20th century, his work was especially valuable during World War Two. Seconded for special duties to the Colonial Office in 1942 he travelled, at a time of considerable risk, to far flung colonies as the Secretary of State's personal representative. These visits included the Caribbean and Bermuda in 1942-3, the Gambia, Nigeria, Kenya, Nyasaland, Mauritius, the Seychelles, Aden, Ceylon and Gibraltar after which, at the end of 1944 he retired only to be re-employed a year later to assist in the reorganisation of the Colonial Service resulting in further distant missions to British colonies in the Pacific. He was therefore uniquely well placed to publish his book The Colonial Office from Within, in 1947.
