PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END (2007) - Captain Hector Barbossa's (Geoffrey Rush) CostumeCaptain Hector Barbossa's (Geoffrey Rush) costume from Gore Verbinski's action-adventure sequel Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End on a display. Barbossa wore his signature costume throughout the film as he teamed with Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) to free Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) from Davy Jones' Locker. The costume is composed of a large felt hat accented with black and brown feathers; a metal pendant with ornate serpent designs on a metal chain; a long nailhead-patterned grey coat; an off-white linen shirt with pleated sleeves; an ornately patterned long woven vest with metal buttons; a yellow fabric sash; a thick leather belt with a decorative metal buckle; a leather fingerless glove; a pair of pleated trousers; and a pair of black leather boots (both labelled "Geoffrey Rush 43"). A resin red-tipped tooth-like earring is attached to a metal hoop hanging from the display's head section. A Ditta Pieroni Bruno costumier label inside the hat displays handwritten text reading "Pirati Dei Caraibi, Barbossa", and a further label reads "Barbossa". An additional leather belt with an attached sheath is draped over the shoulder like a baldric to complete the look of the costume, which comes displayed on a custom-made mannequin. Much of the ensemble is intentionally distressed, giving it the worn-in appearance of authentic pirate garb, notably on the hat, shirt and boots, though there is some fading on the coat. The lot comes with an additional earring and hoop. Dimensions (displayed): 38 cm x 67 cm x 196 cm (15" x 26 1/4" x 77 1/4")Special shipping required; see notice in the Buyer's Guide.Estimate: £30,000 - 60,000 M View all lots from PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END (2007)View all lots from PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN - ALL ITEMSBidding for this lot will end on Thursday, November 9th. The uppermost coin finely carved with the relief seal script characters Daquan wushi ['large coin, fifty'], the script of one coin of the Wang Man interregnum, and the second bears the characters Buquan ['spade coin'], an auspicious coin which was believed to grant women a son in childbirth if they wore it on their sash. The lowest square coin bears the artists signature KOKU. He loaned more than a dozen items to the Royal Academy Exhibition in London, 1935-1936. During the First World War he served with the Grenadier Guards and won a Military Cross for outstanding service. Notable for their extravagant designs and refined workmanship, the present vases display the technical innovations and unconventional aesthetics characterising porcelain vessels made during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor. Porcelain vases decorated with the eye-catching designs of knotted cloths, such as the present examples, are exceedingly rare and remarkable examples of trompe l'oeil. The design was much favoured by the Qianlong Emperor who favoured porcelain wares that contained elements simulating objects in other materials. The potters active at the Imperial kilns in Jingdezhen were thus prompted to create wares that were technically innovative and unconventional in their aesthetics. The Japanese packaging tradition, known as furoshiki, strongly influenced the silky knotted cloth design on the present vases. The illusion of an object wrapped in cloth was frequently evoked in Japanese lacquer and replicated at the Palace Workshops in various media, such as painted enamels, cloisonné, glass, wood and lacquer, throughout the reigns of the Yongzheng and Qianlong Emperors. See, for example, a painted enamel vase and cover, Qianlong mark and period, decorated with designs of knotted scarves, illustrated in Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum: Enamels, vol.5, Beijing, 2011, nos.141 and 142. See also a lacquer box, Yongzheng, decorated with knotted cloth designs, illustrated in China: The Three Emperors, London 2005, no.175.The strikingly conceived design depicted on the present vases convey the high standards achieved by the Imperial ateliers inside the Forbidden City, where artists and artisans, well versed in different media, worked together and influenced each other. The resulting overall design is not only visually appealing, but also highly auspicious as the term baofu ('wrapping cloth') is a wordplay on 'wrapping up good luck.'Compare with a green-ground famille rose trompe l'oeil vase, Qianlong mark and period, featuring similar designs of vaporous clouds decorating the beribboned sash, which was sold at Sotheby's New York, 5 April 2017, lot 3640; see also a pair of related pink-ground famille rose 'trompe l'oeil' jars and covers, Qianlong marks and of the period, which were sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 5 October 2016, lot 3611.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

λ A pair of Royal portrait miniature rings, Portugal, circa 1785, each of elongated rectangular outline, containing an ivory miniature of Dom João, later King John VI of Portugal (1767-1826) and his mother, Queen Maria I of Portugal (1734-1816), each outlined with cushion-shaped diamonds, mounted in silver and gold, each size M, miniatures measuring approximately 3.0 x 1.9cm, original fitted presentation caseIt is possible that these rings were made around 1785 or shortly after, possibly as a diplomatic or personal gift, as the young prince can be seen wearing the Order of the Golden Fleece, bestowed upon him on the occasion of his marriage into the Spanish royal family that year, to the Infanta Carlota Joaquina of Spain. The two figures also wear the early green and red sash of the Three Military Orders, the design of which was changed in 1796. In 1788, Dom João's older brother Dom José died of smallpox, and Dom João became heir to the Portuguese throne. He took over from his mother as regent in 1799, and succeeded to the throne in 1816. The portrait of the Dom João is possibly an embellished version of a painting by Giuseppe Troni, a copy of which can be seen in the British Royal Collection, ref. RCIN 406047, and the portrait of Queen Maria is based on a painted likeness of her dated to circa 1785/6, reproduced by the engraver Gaspar Fróis Machado, a copy of which can be see in the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal, ref. E. 236 A.
