[qty]22.24mm diameter of round medalBy descent.Jessie Landale Cumberland was born in Nainital, India, in 1861, to Richard Felix Wilson Cumberland and Jessie Maria Landale. By the age of 10, she had moved to England and was living with a widowed aunt in Bognor. She took work as a governess, moving to Hove where she lived as a boarder at a house in Brunswick Terrace.The 'DEPUTATION 1910' ribbon and bar may indicate participation in the demonstration outside the Houses of Parliament on the 18th of November 1910, which came to be known as 'Black Friday' for the brutal physical abuse visited upon the Suffragettes by the police and onlookers. Her first arrest appears to have occurred on the 27th of November 1911, when she and a number of other women were detained at Bow Street police station. A stone-throwing campaign had been initiated by the Women's Social and Political Union on the 21st of November, though it is also possible that she was involved in the protests that followed the withdrawal of the Conciliation Bill, news of which had broken on the 24th.Her arrest on the 21st May 1914, which is commemorated on the bar of the medal, resulted from a celebrated episode in the history of the fight for women's suffrage: the demonstration outside Buckingham Palace, as part of which Emmeline Pankhurst attempted to present a petition to King George V. Miss Cumberland was one of 66 women arrested - together with two men - and the episode produced the iconic photograph of Pankhurst being forcibly detained by Chief Inspector Francis Harry Rolfe.Miss Cumberland lived to see the passage of the Representation of the People Act in 1918, dying in March 1935 in Wimbledon,

James Ward after John Hoppner, mezzotint, 'Portrait of Admiral of the Fleet Adam Duncan, 1st Viscount Duncan (1731-1804)', visible sheet 67.5 x 47cm State before letters. A full-length portrait of Adam Duncan (1731–1804) in admiral’s full-dress uniform, 1795–1812, with a flag officer’s gold medal for the Battle of Camperdown and the sash and star of the Russian Imperial Order of Saint Alexander Nevsky. Duncan leans on a telescope with his right hand and stands on a rocky beach. Behind him there is a distant view of a naval engagement.Following the death of his older brother on 31 August 1796, Duncan had succeeded to his family’s estate at Lundie in Forfarshire and was therefore a local landowner. The Corporation voted unanimously on 13 November 1797 to present him with a gift of plate and to commission his portrait for Forfar Town and County Hall in order to mark ‘the pride and satisfaction they feel that a native of this county has distinguished himself so gloriously and rendered such essential service to his King and country’. Duncan was given the freedom to choose his own artist and selected Hoppner, a leading London-based portrait painter and Royal Academician. Hoppner exhibited the finished painting at the Royal Academy in 1798.Adam Duncan entered the navy in 1746 under the care of his maternal uncle, Captain Robert Haldane. He then served under the Honourable Augustus Keppel until promoted to the rank of commander on 21 September 1759, being present at the expedition to Basque Roads in 1757, the reduction of Gorée in 1758 and the blockade of Brest in 1759. While in command of the 'Valiant', he played an important part in the reduction of Belle Isle in June 1761 and Havana in August 1762. After 1763 he was on half pay for fifteen years until 1778. After his return to employment he sat on the court-martials of Keppel and Palliser. In the 'Monarch', he was part of the squadron sent to relieve Gibraltar and took part in the action off St Vincent on 16 January 1780. In the 'Blenheim' he again relieved Gibraltar in 1782 and took part in the action off Cape Spartel. He was promoted to flag rank on 24 September 1787. In February 1795, he was appointed commander-in-chief in the North Sea and charged with blockading the Dutch in the Texel. His fleet was joined by an allied Russian squadron in spring 1797, leading Emperor Paul I to appoint Duncan to the Russian Imperial Order of Saint Alexander Nevsky, the ribbon and sash of which he wears in Hoppner’s portrait. In October 1797, Duncan’s fleet achieved a crushing over the Dutch at the Battle of Camperdown, after which the admiral came ashore for several months and sat for a number of portraits. He continued in command of the North Sea fleet until 1800, which marked the end of his active career. He died suddenly in August 1804.

A good Japanese sword Katana, with green and black gilded lacquer Saya (scabbard), the blade 76cm long (from notch to point), having straight 'Hamon' and being signed to the tang (Nakago) 'Echizen No Kami Fujiwara Sukehiro'. Suke Hiro was an Edo period 17th century swordsmith, but such a signature does not guarantee the age of the sword. Double handed silk bound shark skin grip with iron Tsuba and gilded dragon Menuki. Overall 1.06M long including saya. Provenance: local private vendor who's relative acquired the sword at the end of WWII. THIS ITEM REOFFERED FROM RECENT FINE SALE DUE TO THE UNEXPECTED DEMISE OF THE ORIGINAL PURCHASER. (B.P. 21% + VAT) Overall appearing in fair to good condition, silk binding is grubby, tiny loss to blade point under magnification, small area of rust to the iron tsuba. We are not able to warrant the age of this item.----Detailed Report of the Japanese Samurai Katana. Fine Art Sale – March 2023This ‘Katana’ is identified by the two handed grip or handle (Tsuka), the shallow curvature of the blade, the position and manner in which the sword is worn and, also, the positioning of the maker’s signature, which here appears on the side of the Tang (Nakago) which would traditionally face to the front, away from the body, where the sword is worn on the left side, blade curve up and held in place by the Kimono Sash. The ‘Nakago’ is signed – ‘Echizen No Kami Fujiwara Suke Hiro’. Suke Hiro was a renowned Edo period seventeenth century swordsmith. Because of his fame, there are many fakes and copies of his work, so the signature alone is not a guarantee of authenticity. However, there are many interesting features on this sword and its scabbard (Saya) which would fit with the period that the signature suggests. The Scabbard (Saya) – Ornately decorated in a dark green toned lacquer with black lacquer mottling and all highlighted with extensive gilding. The black lacquered cord loop (Kurigata), is a further indicator that this sword is a Katana. The earlier ‘Tachi’ curved sword, from which the ‘Katana’ was ultimately developed, was essentially a cavalry weapon and wielded from horseback, whereas the Katana became the favoured weapon for hand to hand combat, on foot. The ‘Tachi’ scabbard would have two cord loops and was mounted suspended, unlike the Katana which has one loop and is worn through the belt sash. The finely chisel-engraved metal binding around the scabbard has been tested and proves to be Silver. The configuration of the metalwork around the bottom of the ‘Saya’ appears to be in keeping with some Edo examples observed.The Silver banding was worn by second rank Samurai aristocrats. On this sword, the metal work on both the ‘Saya’ and the ‘Tsuka’ is beautifully enhanced by very finely hand engraved leaf scroll-work. The highest ranks wore gold bound swords. The Katana Blade – This sword has a 76 centimetre blade length, measured from the notch on which the blade collar (Habaki) seats, to the point of the blade. The blade is quite long for a ‘Katana’, which usually has a blade length in the low sixty centimetre range, though ‘Katana’ blades up to 80cm. have been recorded. This blade has a ‘Straight Hamon’ which is the line of a somewhat cloudy appearance immediately above the cutting edge and is an indicator that the blade has been ‘differentially tempered’ in the traditional manner. ‘Differential tempering’ is achieved by applying a layer of clay to the blade, of ever decreasing thickness from the spine of the blade to the cutting edge, the last few millimetres having little or no clay at all, applied to it. The blade is differentially tempered by a process of forge-firing and quenching which produces the required hard edged but flexible sword blade. It is worth mentioning that Suke Hiro achieved some fame in his later career when he developed a technique that produced the elaborately decorative ‘Toran Midare Hamon’ which, in appearance, resembled large high-rising ocean waves and was highly prized by the seventeenth century Edo Samurai. There are, however, extant blades attributed to Suke Hiro, which show a Straight ‘Hamon’. Microscopic investigation of the ‘Hamon’ on this blade, appears to reveal the ‘Martensite Crystals’ at the tempered edge, reducing in density from the cutting edge towards the back of the ‘Hamon’ (nearest to the spine), all in all suggesting that this ‘Hamon’ is correct. A ‘Hamon’ can be contrived and faked by acid etching, but this does not appear to be the case with this sword. The naked blade and Nakago of this sword appear to compare visually to the 17th. century Edo blades of the period, illustrated in ‘Facts and Fundamentals of Japanese Swords – a Collector’s Guide’ by Nobuo Nakahara (translated by Paul Martin). The cross section shape of the blade (Mune), appears to conform with the ‘gyo-no-mune’ shape seen on page 60 fig. 70 of Nobuo Nakahara’s guide. The patina on the ‘Nakago’ is of a brownish hue and the finishing hand filing marks are clearly visible.The Sword Handle (Tsuka) – The ‘Tsuka’ is the double-handed grip which is separated from the sword blade by the blade collar (Habaki) and two sword guard spacers (Seppa) which sit either side of the sword guard, itself (Tsuba). On this sword there appears to be a ‘Tsuba’ maker’s signature, in the Kanji flanking the ‘Nakago’ aperture. We think that part of the inscription on the ‘Tsuba’ makes reference to Yamashiro no Kuni province and the Kanji to the left of the ‘Nakago’ aperture, though somewhat obscured by rust, can be the name ‘Tadatsugu’. Further research has revealed that there were at least three swordsmiths of that name working in Yamashiro province, between 1644 and 1673. The ‘Tsuka’ is held in place on the ‘Nakago by a Bamboo tapered peg (Mekugi) which passes through a single hole in the ‘Nakago’ and secures the whole assembly in place. The ‘Tsuba’ is plain iron with no adornment other than the Kanji characters mentioned above. The body of the ‘Tsuka’ is made from wood, before being traditionally wrapped in a layer of Ray skin (Samegawa). There are two gilded white metal, in this case, ‘Dragon’ talismans (Menuki) , one on each side of the hilt where the sword is held and these are secured in place by a two-colour silk ‘wrap’ (Ito). The ‘Ito’ is secured at the ‘Tsuba’ end of the handle with the ‘Tsuka’ collar (Fuchi) and at the opposite end, by the ornate pommel (Kashira) which, on this sword is fashioned as two arms with hands folded, one on top of the other and embracing the top of the hilt. Both the ‘Fuchi’ and the ‘Kashira’ are emblazoned with the Family Crest (Mon) of the ‘Minokuni branch of the Ikeda family’, two of which are raised and gilded and two which are raised, but with no gilding. The circular ‘Mon’ is in the form of a stylised Butterfly.Condition – There is some degradation of the Lacquer-work on the Saya and very minor fraying of the silk in the ‘Ito’, which is also grubby in places. There is a small loss to the point of the blade which becomes apparent under magnification. There is a small area of rust visible on the signed surface of the ‘Tsuba’. There is a minor distortion of the ‘Mekugi’ peg. Otherwise, the ‘Katana’ is in very good condition.We have described this Katana to the best of our ability and knowledge but, ultimately, it must rest with the buyer regarding decisions as to authenticity and age.

In der Öse der Silberstempel "900". Vergoldung großteils abgetragen, das Emaille jedoch völlig intakt und unbeschädigt. Enrico Caviglia (* 4. Mai 1862 in Finale Ligure; ? 22. März 1945 ebenda) Caviglia absolvierte an der Militärakademie in Turin eine Offiziersausbildung. Im Jahr 1883 wurde er zum Unterleutnant befördert und diente dann bei verschiedenen Artillerieverbänden. Von 1904 bis 1911 war er italienischer Militärattaché in Tokio und Peking. Er nahm am Eritreakrieg (1886?1889), an der Schlacht von Adua (1896) im italienisch-äthiopischen Krieg sowie am italienisch-türkischen Krieg (1912) teil. Bei Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkriegs wurde Caviglia Brigadegeneral und kommandierte die Infanteriebrigade ?Bari? am unteren Isonzo. 1917 konnte er sich als Generalleutnant in der elften Isonzoschlacht auszeichnen und mit seinen ihm unterstehenden Truppen auf die Hochfläche von Heiligengeist-Bainsizza nordöstlich von Görz vordringen. In der Schlacht von Vittorio Veneto kommandierte er die 8. italienische Armee, die die Schlacht Ende Oktober 1918 letztlich entschied. Unmittelbar nach Kriegsende zeichnete ihn der britische König mit dem Order of the Bath aus. In Italien wurde er am 22. Februar 1919 Senator und in der Regierung Orlando Kriegsminister. Er löste das von Gabriele d'Annunzio geschaffene Fiume-Problem. Am 25. Juni 1926 erhielt er vom faschistischen Regime wegen seiner Verdienste im Ersten Weltkrieg den Rang eines Marschalls von Italien. Caviglia lebte in den Jahren danach wegen seiner Abneigung gegen den Faschismus relativ zurückgezogen. Nach dem Waffenstillstand vom 8. September 1943 übernahm er das Kommando in Rom und erreichte in Verhandlungen mit Generalfeldmarschall Albert Kesselring für die italienische Hauptstadt den Status einer ?Offenen Stadt?. Her expression is carved sensitively, signifying her beauty which she was famous for, and her kimono is adorned with various mon-roundels and neatly engraved patterns. The well-toned wood is superbly polished and lacquered in gold, the surface beautifully worn with a dark, warm patina. Greenfield. Ex-collection Joe Kurstin. Dr. M. Joseph 'Joe' Kurstin (1931-2021) was a prominent Miami ophthalmologist who arguably built one of the greatest netsuke collections of all time. He was known by netsuke and inro lovers worldwide and made many lifelong friends in this tight-knit community. He published several books and articles on the subject and generously lent his collection for exhibitions at the Yale University Gallery, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Epcot Center at Disney World, and The Tobacco and Salt Museum, Tokyo.As Joe Kurstin writes in INSJ vol. 27, no. 1, the subject was identified by Yukari Yoshida. Izumo no Okuni (1572-1610) is credited as being the foundress of the kabuki theatre. She was a shrine virgin (miko) of Izumo Taisha Shrine and was well known for her skills in dancing and acting, as well as for her great beauty. It was the custom of the time to send priests and miko out to solicit contributions for the shrine and thus she was sent to Kyoto to perform sacred dances and songs. Her original and exotic style of dance, known for its sultriness and sexual innuendo, became hugely popular and was labeled Kabuki, which derived from a 16th century colloquial expression, She is thought to have begun performing her new art style of kabuki theatre in the dry riverbed of the Kamo River in Kyoto. Okuni's troupe quickly gained immense popularity, and were known for their performers, who were often lower-class women Okuni had recruited to act in her all-female theatre group.
