A large and rare embroidered portrait wall hanging, English, circa 1700, worked in wools in long and short and split stitch with a central regal figure in wrapping robe, with ermine trimmed mantle, holding a portrait of a handsome boy in lace cravat, armour breastplate, with blue garter sash, high, powdered wig, she holds a be-ribboned laurel wreath which also appears on the boy's head, angels offer her fruits and blooms and hold back blue and scarlet drapes which reveal a landscape with Pegasus, two figures, a hound and a fallen figure, 224 by 161cm There are several suggestions as to the identity of the sitter. The most likely is that of Queen Anne I (reigned 1702-1714).The oval portrait in that case would be her son. She married Prince George of Denmark in 1683 and experienced eighteen pregnancies but only one babe survived infancy - William, Duke of Gloucester (1689-1700) He suffered from encephalitis and died at the age of eleven. He was awarded the garter at the age of six and a half. A portrait by Godfrey Kneller painted in 1699 shows the young Duke similarly attired. (NPG image 5228). A portrait of Princess Anne by Kneller in 1694 could have been used as a design source for the main figure.
