Lot 131

A rare sculpted oak model of a European merchant or army officer, first quarter 18th century, Dutch or possibly French, in contemporary attire including tricorn hat, cravat and long coat with sash and billowing drape, with buckled boots, on a rectangular base, 41cm high, 16cm wideThe present lot shows similarities to depictions of East India traders manufactured in the English and Dutch colonies during the early years of the 18th century. The best-known versions of these are by Chinese plaster sculptor Amoy Chinqua. His circa 1716 model of merchant and colonial administrator Joseph Collet, in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London, is particularly similar in attire. As the sculpture presented here is made of oak, it is more likely an unusual European rendition of a similar subject.Condition Report: The sculpture bears the usual minor marks, knocks and scuffs overall consistent with age. There is some evidence of minor old worming, particularly to the base and the left sleeve, though this doesn't appear to be active. There is an old repair across the socle, mostly visible to the underside. There are two shallow surface inconsistencies (narrow, each circa 0.5-1cm long) to the coat, possibly inconsistencies in the timber of very small chips. The left elbow is a little scuffed.Condition Report Disclaimer

There are also various marks and scuffs to the stomach and the rear. There is some nibbling/old chipping to the edges of the truncated arms and legs, with one or two fresher chips particularly to the right upper arm. There are some shallow losses to the folds of the drapery. The lower abdomen has an area of shallow scuffing/surface irregularity, with shallow pitting. There are circular apertures to the drapery, neck, and genitalia, where further parts may once have been attached (this lot is lacking elements as it is fragmentary in nature). The metal stand has some slight wear to the colour of the edges and stem. Condition Report Disclaimer

The canvas has poor tension with undulations across the surface. The canvas is attached to a wooden strainer. At the lower left corner is a severe deformation causing cracking and flaking to the paint layer. There is flaking and old losses along the lower edge which have been overpainted. Around the edges of the portrait are areas of cracking with raised edges. Across the picture are small, scattered losses. Circle of Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646-1723)Portrait of a nobleman, half-length, wearing armouroil on canvas, painted oval98 x 71cm, unframedProvenance: Horton Lodge, Windsor, Berkshire.Condition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. The canvas appears to have been cut down at some stage, the top of the oval has been removed. To return the painting to its original dimensions a strip of canvas has been added along the top edge. The join between the two canvases has some movement in it with associated paint loss. An old repair on the sitter's left cheek has been crudely done, it is lumpy and uneven with raised cracks. There are small lumps across the surface caused by the lining. Along the lower edge are numerous scuffs with scattered flakes of paint loss. There are localised areas of overpaint in the sitter's face and background. The varnish has degraded becoming dark and yellow overtime, almost completely obscuring details such as the red sash and giving the painting a grubby appearance overall.
