WW2 Japanese Signed Prayer Flag & 1000 Stitch Belt Grouping, interesting pair of items brought home as souvenirs by a British serviceman from the Far East, the silk prayer flag is inked with various Japanese messages / prayers. Staining and wear to the flag with some small holes. The white cloth waist sash with stitched balls and red felt Japanese sun insignia to the centre, known as 1000 stitch belt, given and worn as good luck charms by Japanese soldiers in battle during WW2. Also accompanied by some Japanese government occupation bank notes. Interesting grouping of items. The flag measures 80 x 68cms.
A black attaché case containing a quantity of Masonic memorabilia relating to the West Lancashire Lodge to include aprons, sash, two jewels, one yellow metal with green ribbon and bar for 'Vice Patron' and one silver gilt for the 'Menorah Chapter No.4513' inscribed verso 'Presented to Ex Comp E.L. Scottish School (early 19th century), Portrait of a gentleman, half length, dressed in a fur trimmed cloak, red sash and black feathered hat, wearing a portrait miniature around his neck oil on canvas, inscribed 'By Mead 1801' to canvas verso, unframed 19 x 15in. (48.25 x 38cm.) * Has been cleaned and revarnished at some stage - some small retouches visible under UV, but appears to be a blocking varnish so not much is visible. Small area of craquelure and paint flaking to lower left. Two tiny glued splits and indents from back of canvas to lower right of the feathered hat and another indent from grit beneath stretcher to top left corner. Some small flakes and abrasions to edge of canvas.

The canvas is in plane and the tension is adequate. There are a few small losses to the paint layer and some minor abrasion in the background. The varnish is semi-matte and clear. Areas of overpaint are reasonably well matched to the original.
English School, 19th centuryPortrait of Sir Henry Crofton Lowther (1858-1939), aged five, half length, in black costume with a red sashoil on canvas, painted oval54 x 43.5cmSir Henry Crowther was a British diplomat and Ambassador to Chile and Denmark.Condition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. The canvas is in plane with good tension and the paint layers are in a good condition. Retouching in the figures face and outfit is carefully applied and mainly following cracks. In the background the overpaint appears slightly more brushy in handling but the extent of this is difficult to determine. The varnish layer has a smeary appearance which is slightly blanched and opaque in the background.

The Earl of Listowel KP, JP, DL, ( 1833-1924), fine Victorian Irish deputy Lord Lieutenants dress uniform by Henry Poole, comprising scarlet tunic with silver bullion shamrock decorated collar and cuffs and silvered crown buttons, trousers with broad shamrock silver lace, pair leather boots, silver bullion dress belt with sword slings, a bicorn hat with silver lace and feather plume, a fine silk sash for the Order of Saint Patrick all contained in a japanned tin trunk with brass plaque 'Earl of Listowel'. The Earl was an Anglo-Irish Peer, Soldier and liberal politician. Follower of Sir Antony Van Dyck (1599-1641),Portrait of Charles I, Head and shoulders, with lace edged collar and garter star to his left sleeve,Oil on canvas,75cm x 60cm,Gilt framed Provenance: The Estate of Lord Kenyon, Gredington. CONDITION REPORT:The paint surface shows some surface marking to the top half of the picture, and more extensive marking and some small areas of paint loss to the bottom half, particularly to the lower left corner. There is a white smear approximately 2cm long to the right of the picture, 4cm in from the right side of the frame and 24cm down from the top of the frame. The paint surface appears thinly applied in paler areas of the picture, with the canvas weave visible under the eyes, in the lace collar and in the blue pendant sash. The sash also shows further areas of discolouration. UV examination reveals no evidence of significant restoration, although the picture appears to have been re-lined on later stretchers at some point in the past.

A BRONZE 'FOREIGNER' CANDLESTICKChina, late Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The bearded foreigner cast on a hexagonal base with his left arm raised and right hand resting on his hip, dressed with ornate jewelry and a sash tied across the rotund belly above a tunic with long flowing ribbons, the face with bulging eyes, bushy eyebrows and a cheerful smile. Cast on the top with a candleholder, most certainly a later addition.Condition: Good condition with minor wear and casting irregularities as well as minuscule nicks here and there.
