The important group of orders and medals to Sir William Smart K.C.B., Naval Surgeon and latterly Honorary Physician to Queen Victoria, comprising: K.C.B. military division Star, gold Neck Badge (marked for Garrards 1876) and sash, Crimea Medal with Sebastopol clasp loose on ribbon, 2nd China War Medal, Turkish Crimea Medal (French issue, fitted with scroll suspension), French Legion d’ Honneur, all medals unnamed as issued, with a mounted set of miniatures; offered together with an extensive collection of documents including warrants and correspondence, and a later painted portrait of the recipient. Sir William Smart (1817-87) entered the navy as a Surgeon in 1841 and was promoted to Staff Surgeon in 1850. Qualified as M.D. (Aberdeen University, 1853) and M.R.C.P. (London, 1860), and appointed Deputy Inspector General of [Naval] Hospitals in 1858. Made Inspector General in 1869 and placed in charge of Haslar Hospital, Gosport, from April 1873 until his retirement in Nov. 1877. Served in the Chinese Wars of 1842 and 1857 (medal) and in the Crimean War, 1854-55 (medal & clasp, Turkish medal & French L. d’H.). Honorary Physician to Queen Victoria from Nov. 1876 and made KCB in June 1877 (previously CB, 1867). This recipient was also awarded the Gilbert Blane medal (not present with group). Appears of the roll for China 1842, indicating that the 2nd China War Medal may be an exchange or replacement. With copy research.
Three 19th century Indian gouache full length portraits of gentlemen. Condition Report: lot 334 - the pair of pictures frame sizes 31 x 22 cm image size 18 x 10 cm; 3rd picture frame size 37 x 25.5 cm, image size 18 x 10 cm. the larger picture has damage to the border surrounding the image. on the picture of the gentleman with the sash is a crease to the lower left hand corner on the border.
Imperial Japanese Officer’s Full Dress Uniform and Shako. A good and impressive example. Comprising: Shako, this of dark cloth with gold cord decoration to the body and crown. To the front a large gilt chrysanthemum device, this supports a red and white feather plume. Black patent leather peak and to the interior a leather sweatband ... Frock coat, tunic three quarter length of dark cloth with blue facings to the collar and cuffs, each with gold lace and cord decoration. The plastron front with a double row of gilt buttons and to the right side a metal Pilots badge. The gold bullion shoulder cords with two silver stars. The interior with a quilted cotton lining ... Red and white tasselled sash ... Full dress sword belt of black leather with gilt metal clasp and complete with sword slings. Overall GC bullion remains bright GC (5 items)
Edwardian Irish Royal Munster Fusiliers Colour Sergeant’s Scarlet Tunic. A rare example, scarlet cloth with blue facings. The shoulder straps, white cotton embroidered “RMF”, with a flaming grenade. To the right sleeve Colour Sergeant rank badges. Complete with brass General Service buttons. The interior with part white blanket lining and issue stamps MF 4509 10 05”, this indicating an issue date October 1905. The overall condition is good, some dulling to the scarlet. Collar badges absent ... Accompanied by shoulder sash. (2 items)
23rd (Royal Welsh Fusiliers) Officer’s Scarlet Coatee. A very good and rare example, scarlet cloth with royal dark blue facings to the cuffs and collar, the latter ornamented with gold lace and Regimental gilt buttons, these buttons repeated to the sash cuffs and to the front in a double line of ten arranged in pairs. The back retains original black silk tails to the neck and skirt ornaments of a flaming grenade. The interior with lining. Scarlet remains bright minor age wear, 42 buttons present. GC ... Accompanied by a pair of Fusilier Field Officer pattern gold bullion epaulets. The gilt lace strap ornamented with a Flaming Grenade, Garter Star and a “VR” embroidered cypher upon a cushion. The gilt metal crescent supporting fine twist wire tassels. The underside with leather backing and silk cushion. Provision for loops and laces, which matches the coatee. Bullion bright complete with metal storage tin.
Maritime Interest. A sailor`s sash band for the Normandie ship, a painting on wood and a French postcard album with the Normandie in port. Auctioneer`s Note. During WWII, Normandie was seized by US Authorities at New York and renamed USS Lafayette. In 1942, the liner caught fire while being converted to a troop ship, it capsized onto a port side and came to rest on the Hudson river. Although savaged at great expense, restoration was deemed too costly and she was scrapped in October 1946.

The medal in the form of a five petalled red and green enamelled flower, bearing the inscription 'Impreratiricis Auspiciis' ("under the Auspices of the empress") - Queen Victoria), within a blue enamelled band, with a gilt relief of Queen Victoria to centre, to a gilt medal crown surmount suspended from a deep blue ribboned sash, presented in a black leather case with the initials "C.I.E." embossed to centre, the interior lining signed Garrard & Co. Ltd., by special appointment to his majesty the king, 24 Albemarle St., London, and Dalhousie Sq. Calcutta, medal measures approximately 6cm high and 3.5cm wide
