30 x 24,5 cm.ProvenanceChristie´s, London 21.06.1991. lot 67. - Dr. Gustav Rau Collecion, Stuttgart. - Lempertz, Cologne, 16.11.2013, lot 1555. - North German private collection. This charcoal drawing is a preparatory study for a series of 12 sheets with portraits of Prussian army leaders that Menzel created in the early 1850s and which were converted into woodcuts by Eduard Kretzschmar in 1856. The series of 12 large-format woodcuts was published in 1854/56 under the title "Aus König Friedrichs Zeit. War and Peace Heroes". The portrait of Lieutenant General Hans Karl von Winterfeldt was the sixth in this series. Born in 1707, Winterfeldt was one of Frederick the Great's closest military advisors. Menzel, however, does not show him as an army commander in uniform and tricorn, but in a more private moment, namely tying a sash around his waist. While the head is slightly cut off by the edge of the sheet, the painter focuses his attention mainly on this sash, the sitter's hands and the hilt of his sword. Two further preparatory studies for this portrait are known. A very similar section of the picture was shown in a sheet offered at auction by C. G. Boerner in 1990 (Lagerliste 92, 1990, no. 27) and a more spontaneous study is in the possession of the Berlin National Gallery, in which Menzel's attention is even more clearly focused on the sash motif (inv. no. 175).

Since the present sitter is depicted wearing what appears to be the sash of the dynastic Order of Orange-Nassau, he might be more likely identified as a member of the royal house of The Netherlands. ASCRIBED TO MARCUS GHEERAERTS THE YOUNGER (circa 1561/62-1636) A portrait of a young gentleman wearing a lace ruff and a red sash, bust-length, oil on panel, 56cm x 44.5cm, in a giltwood frame carved with tulip heads and crossheads and with scrolling acanthus leaves. Provenance: Apparently sold at Messrs Christie, Manson & Woods on July 22nd 1932 for the Bramley family of Badmondisfield, Hall, Suffolk. Private collection, Dewlish, Dorset. Marcus Gheeraerts became a fashionable portraitist in the last decade of the reign of Elizabeth I, under the patronage of her champion and Pageant-Master Sir Henry Lee. He later became a favourite portrait painter of James I and Queen Anne of Denmark. Although raised in England, the artist's work reflects a continental aesthetic very different from the flat modelling of features and pure brilliant colours associated with other Elizabethan artists. Indeed, stylistically his work is more akin to the portraits of Frans Pourbus.Â
Studio of Daniel Mytens (?Delft 1590-1644 The Hague)Portrait of King Charles I, three-quarter-length, standing, wearing a brown and gold doublet and hose, the sash of the Order of the Garter and the Great George, holding a pair of gloves, beside the Scottish crown laid on a table oil on canvas 109.2 x 83.4cm (43 x 32 13/16in).Footnotes:Although the composition of the present portrait does not appear to be directly derived from any hitherto known portrait of the King, it can be related to a number of portraits of King Charles I by Daniel Mytens. The head in the present work can be compared to the Mytens in the Royal Collection which is signed and dated 1628. The composition which shows the Great George suspended from the Garter sash is known through engravings, published by Franciscus van Hoeye after Mytens. Perhaps most interesting of all is the presence of what must be a representation of the Scottish royal crown, which is unique to the present portrait, all the other portraits of Charles I that depict him with a crown having shown him beside the Tudor Crown, otherwise known as the Crown of Henry VIII. Although Charles succeeded his father in 1625, his long-delayed and long-awaited Scottish coronation did not take place until he finally returned to his native Scotland in the early summer of 1633, making a magnificent civic entry, the first such royal pageant in Edinburgh since 1590. It is possible that the present portrait was commissioned to record this event and is a rare contemporary depiction of the Scottish crown. The regalia known as the Honours of Scotland, which include the Crown along with the Sceptre and Sword of State, unlike their English equivalent of the time, still exist. Following the Act of Union of 1707, which unified the Kingdom of Scotland and the Kingdom of England to form the Kingdom of Great Britain, and having no ceremonial role to play in the proceedings of the new Parliament of Great Britain in London, the Honours were locked away in Edinburgh Castle. There they remained all but forgotten in a chest until 1818, when a group of people including Sir Walter Scott set out to find them to great public acclaim. Charles's complicated relationship with Scotland was summarized by the historian C. V. Wedgwood: 'It was not the least of this king's misfortunes that he was always too much of a Scotsman for England and too much of an Englishman for Scotland. In many ways he was the type of the absentee Scot, rootless in England and uprooted in Scotland.'For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

TSALWE ORDEN - Ordensdekoratin 1. Klasse. Ordensdekoration. Gold. Order of the Tsalwé, a First Class non-Royal award. Gold. TheTsalwé or Salwe was a traditional Burmese decoration of honour which, although without direct parallels on the Western model, could be compared to a Knighthood. Regulations governing the award were issued in 1784 and the insignia was worn over the left shoulder and across the breast, in a similar manner to a conventional sash. The principal classes of the Order were indicated by the number of gold strands - 3, 6, 9 or 12 for non-Royal recipients. Princes of the Blood Royal received more strands according to their seniority while the King himself wore 24 strands (in two sets of 12). Major-General Albert Fytche, the British Envoy to Burma, was invested with the Order at the Royal Palace in Mandalay during his first audience with the King, Mindon Min, on 11th October 1867. According to Fytche's own narrative "...the King said something in a low voice to his sons, and a nephew of His Majesty brought to the Envoy on a golden salver a small packet, which when opened was found to contain a collar of the Burmese Order of the Tsalwé of the first grade. The Burmese Minister, on a motion from his Majesty, said, "invest the Envoy," and Captain Sladen put it over the Envoy's left shoulder. Colonel Fytche bowed, and thanked His Majesty for the honour conferred on him...".
