Conveyance (bargain and sale) for £133 6s 8d, 24 April 1544, Anthony Knyvet, knight, and his wife Avice to John Alen the younger, citizen and mercer of London, the manor of Little Kelk (Litle Kelle) with messuages, lands, tenements, leasows, meadows, pastures, woods, underwoods, commons, mills, waters, marshes, fishings, rents, reversions and services, knights’ fees, wards, marriages and reliefs in Yorkshire, granted to Sir Anthony by the Crown by letters patent dated at Hampton Court, 9 January 1541, vellum deed with two red wax seals appended, signed by me Antony Knyvett, 27 x 42cm, framed and glazedQty: (1)NOTESThe manor of Little Kelk lies in Foston on the Wolds, 8 miles south-west of Bridlington in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Records of the manor survive between 1323 and 1914. In 1322 the manor belonged to Bridlington Priory, which was forfeited to the Crown following the attainder of the last prior, William Wood, for participation in the Pilgrimage of Grace, for which he was executed (VCH Yorkshire 3 (1974) 199-205). An account covering 22 April 1536 – 21 April 1538 survives as TNA E 315/283/4. The transaction recorded by this bargain and sale was confirmed in Trinity Term 1544 by final concord, which describes the property as the manor, 12 messuages, 2 mills called walk mills and land in Little Kelk. The patent granting the manor to Knyvett, as Anthony Knyvett esquire, survives as East Riding Archives DDSC/32, and a copy of this document as zDDX852/7. Anthony Knyvett was a courtier, having served as a gentleman usher or waiter in the Privy Chamber from at least 1516. He served as Black Rod of Windsor Castle, 1536-1543, a JP in Kent, 1539-1542, was appointed Knight Porter of Calais on 11 April 1541, was superintending the defences of Portsmouth in 1544, and retired as Lieutenant of the Tower of London, with a pension of £100, in September 1546. His will, naming him one of the gentleman waiters of the king’s privy chamber, 21 June 1548, was proved in PCC by his widow and sole executrix Lady Avice on 6 July 1549 (TNA PROB 11/32/266). She was the daughter of Henry Mortelman of All Hallows Barking, and the widow of Nicholas Gibson, Prime Warden of the Grocers’ Company 1536-37 and a sheriff of London 1538-39, who died in 1540. She founded the Coopers’ Company school in Ratcliff Highway, and portraits of Sir Anthony and Lady Knyvett were to be seen at Coopers Hall in 1936. She died on 3 October 1554.

Lot 421

An award-winning example of a motoring icon.An early AZL model constructed in the Paris Levallois factoryOne of the very last with a full-length hood with a fascinating historyMultiple show winner including Best in Class at Goodwood Festival of Speed 2018; awarded a solid silver dish by CartierFeatured on Car SOS, YouTube and in a recent book of the 2CVIf not an absolute Best-of-Breed example, it’s about as close as you will findThe Citroën 2CV is unquestionably one of the most important European cars of all time. It helped put the French working class on wheels, especially important after the ravages of WWII and offered basic transportation, a boon to the French economy both from a transportation and a manufacturing standpoint. There are a number of ‘urban myths’ concerning head of Citroën, Pierre-Jules Boulanger’s 1930’s vision for the future but, essentially, his car had to be able to “ transport four peasants with 100kg of farm produce to market at 37mph, in clogs, and across muddy unpaved roads if necessary. The roof had to be high enough, enabling driver and passengers to ride whilst wearing their Sunday hats to church, the car’s fuel consumption would average 90-95mpg, it should be able to drive across a ploughed field without breaking the eggs it was carrying and, above all, it had to stay within the two horsepower fiscal bracket to remain affordable.” Disparagingly dubbed ‘Tin Snail’ in the US and fondly known as La Deuche in France, the 2CV is one of the country’s most recognisable icons. The example offered here, chassis #333499, is one of 107,250 built for the 1957 model year. All 2CVs at that time had the basic 425cc motor (an increased capacity from the original 375cc) giving 12.5bhp and a top speed of 50 mph, and were supplied in Grey.1957 was an important year for 2CV construction as that model year’s offerings showcased the first major design changes to the model. These changes included larger mirrors, a larger rear window and, for the first time, a heating and ventilation system. Chassis #333499 denotes this particular car is an early AZ model constructed in the Paris Levallois factory between September 1956 and August 1957. #333499 is actually an example of the desirable ‘AZL’ specification car, (the L in AZL signifies this is a luxury model) featuring additional detailing from the factory, including the strip of polished aluminium which runs down the bonnet (commonly called the 'bagette') and superior seat cover material, making this example stand out from all other 2CV models.According to the car's history file, it was imported into the UK in September 1970, and wore the registration 'ELM 166J' for the next 43 years; it was subsequently bought in 1983 (being sold with a house!) by a very enthusiastic 2CV advocate, a Mr James Gibson of Nottingham, who restored the car and used it regularly. According to his notes, this car is one of the oldest known survivors of its type in the UK. The car went on to have a far later restoration, including a new galvanised chassis (but retaining its original suspension and axles), and has been superbly renewed in the classic colour scheme of Gris Clair (grey) with a royal blue roll-top and seats. This car is a multiple show winner including ‘Best in Class’ at Goodwood (Festival of Speed) 2018 and was awarded a solid silver dish by Cartier. It has also appeared on the television show ‘Car SOS’, can be seen on YouTube and featured in a recent book of the 2CV.Since completion, it has been used sparingly during the summer months only, with recently fitted new Michelin 125/400 tyres. Fully serviced and with 123 Electro Ignition for extra reliability, this 2CV drives as well as it presents. The car is accompanied by a decent history file, including many invoices, period photos of Mr Gibson driving it, photos of the restoration and a 2CV GB Club letter authenticating its model type and condition. The Deux Chevaux is a firm favourite of owners of two similarly early examples, motoring journalists Chris Harris and Andrew Frankel, who are both smitten with the charms of these very special cars.A superb example of a highly significant French automobile, this 2CV is fully ready to be appreciated and maybe, when the current crises is over, it would be a perfect way to really enjoy the countryside that we have all been missing over recent months.SpecificationMake: CITROËNModel: 2CV AZLYear: 1957Chassis Number: 333499Transmission: ManualEngine Number: 2118440Drive Side: Left-hand DriveMake: LHDInterior Colour: BlueClick here for more details and images

Lot 10

Dambusters - a unique and important piece of WWII Second World War history - a fragment of engine from downed Lancaster Bomber ED925 / AJ-M ' M ' (Mother), which crashed en-route to the Mohne Dam during the famous Dam Buster / Operation Chastise raids of 16/17th May 1943. The relic appears to be a section of alloy engine - possibly a pump of some kind, and remains in 'relic' condition. The Lancaster, piloted by John Hopgood, after dropping its famous 'bouncing bomb' on the Mohne Dam, crashed in a field in Ostönnen. The crash site was discovered and excavated in c1973. The fragment retains an old card label, with some faint pencil details legible. Measures approx; 14cm wide.  About the raid and subsequent crash: Hopgood took off in the first group alongside Gibson and Mick Martin. It was on the journey to the Mönhe that Hopgood's aircraft AJ-M (M Mother) was hit by flak while passing the airfield at Dülmen. Hopgood along with gunners George Gregory and Tony Burcher were injured but they continued the attack. There is a possibility that Gregory was killed by flak at this point. The damaged aircraft reached the dam where they attacked at 00:32, ten minutes after Gibson. However, they were struck again by anti-aircraft fire and their bomb was released too late. It bounced over the dam and exploded on a power station on the other side. The aircraft was fatally damaged at this point and Hopgood remained at the controls, gaining height to allow his crew to bail out. Rear gunner, Pilot Officer Tony Burcher, remembered hearing Hopgood say; "Get out you damn fool. If only I could get another 300 ft. I can't get any more height". John Fraser, John Minchin and Tony Burcher jumped, but the already injured Minchin did not survive. However, Fraser and Burcher survived and were made prisoners of war. AJ-M crashed in a field near Ostönnen, 6 kilometres from the dam. The bodies of Hopgood, Brennan, Navigator Kenneth (Ken) Earnshaw from Bridlington and Gregory were found inside.
