AN ARCHAIC CEREMONIAL BONE CARVING, SHANG DYNASTY 商代骨雕祭祀用器China, 14th-11th century BC. A thin fragment of a hip bone, likely from a medium sized canine. Carved to one side with an impressive taotie mask and two kui dragons within a key-fret (leiwen) border, all in deep and high relief, adorned with neatly applied incision work, below a further key-fret band. The solid bone is smoothened around the edges with a fine sheen to the decorated surface.Provenance: Galerie Wannieck, Paris, September to October 1942 (according to an ancient family ledger inspected by Cabinet Portier, Paris, France, during their appraisal of the complete de Strycker estate; this ledger remains in the possession of the de Strycker family and may not be copied). Collection of Robert and Isabelle de Strycker, acquired from the above and thence by descent in the same family. The display stand has three old collection labels. Robert de Strycker (1903-1968) was a French engineer who specialized in metallurgy. He was a Stanford graduate, a professor at the University of Leuven, a director of the Institute of Metallurgy at the Universite Catholique de Louvain, and one of the most influential members of the faculty of applied sciences. After World War II, he made large contributions to France's post-war recovery. Robert and his wife Isabelle (1915-2010) first encountered Chinese art at the British Museum during a stay in London in the 1930s. Enamored with the style and beauty, they both decided to study and collect Chinese works of art. In 1938 they eventually began to build their collection, buying from Belgian, Parisian, and English dealers. They kept close contact with the famous English collector Sir Harry Garner (1891-1977) and noted Czech collector and expert Fritz Low-Beer (1906-1976).Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Possibly with some old fills. Extensive wear, losses, natural imperfections including foramina and fissures, encrustations, signs of weathering and erosion.Weight: 29.2 g (excl. stand)Dimensions: Length 9.8 cm (excl. stand) With an old fitted velvet display stand, dating to the first half of the 20th century. A larger bone carving similarly adorned with ferocious masks and stylized cicadas, formerly in the Gibson and Stoclet collections, is said to have been discovered together with five other examples in Anyang, Henan; see Georges A. Lot 258

A fascinating pattern book from a British earthenware manufactory, circa 1805-15Manuscript notebook containing circa 150 hand-painted designs for teaware, showing patterns for full plates and borders, numbered and coded for use within a factory, some with further annotations, manuscript list of prices at rear, 53 leaves, circa 19 blank, pen and watercolour, partial watermarks for Ruse & Turners 1805, reused marbled endpapers, original calf, 8vo (18mm x 120mm)Footnotes:This charming yet tantalising pattern book will have been used within a British pottery manufactory at the start of the 19th century. It records tableware patterns, drawn by hand either as a section of the border of a plate, or as the complete design used on a plate or saucer. These are identified by a sequence of pattern numbers ranging from 6 to 154 with some gaps. Some of the earlier patterns have been re-numbered, indicating perhaps a new partnership or change of factory ownership. This might have coincided with the decision to record the factory's patterns within this book. A watermark of 1805 within its pages gives us the earliest possible date for when this illustrated record was compiled, although the first patterns are incomplete and may have been copied from an earlier volume or unbound sheets of individual patterns. The earliest patterns suggest this began as a manufactory of creamware at the turn of the 19th century. Many appear to be copies of patterns used by major manufactories such as Wedgwood, Spode and Davenport. Subsequently pearlware or 'whiteware' was probably made, with a slight possibility that some patterns were intended for bone china. Stylistically, all of the patterns would appear to predate 1815. Two sections within the book bear the headings 'Painted Tea Ware' and 'Enamelled Tea Ware'. The former probably refers to underglaze painting (now known as Pratt Ware), while the latter indicates the use of overglaze enamel colours. Significantly, many patterns refer to the use of 'luster', which will have been painted in silver (or Platinum) lustre. This small pattern book begins with a few drawings showing pottery shapes that were popular in the period around 1800-10. Tables at the end of the book link some of the pattern numbers with a cost price per dozen, presumably to be used when pricing a complete tea service. Alongside each drawn pattern, a letter and number code gives a different price in shillings and pence. This code probably helped the pottery determine the wages paid to the decorating departments responsible for completing each pattern. The lustreware patterns that appear within the pages of the present lot may provide clues to the maker responsible. The future study of this pattern book may benefit from comparison with the Leeds Pottery pattern books which have been published almost in their entirety by John Griffin in 2005. Leeds was a creamware manufactory that subsequently made other ceramic bodies and some painted decoration included the use of lustre. Many other lustre-decorated tablewares and their makers are discussed by Geoffrey Godden and Michael Gibson in their book Collecting Lustreware (1991). On page 42 the authors note '...The Stoke-on-Trent City Museum contains several hundred lustred articles closely packed on twenty-two deep shelves, yet, we believe, only six of these pieces bear a maker's mark.' Little wonder that the maker of this pattern book has so far proved elusive. There are presently two mystery groups known to British porcelain collectors as 'The Pattern Book Factory' or 'Pattern Book class'. A pattern book by an unknown china maker working in Staffordshire in the period 1800-09 is preserved in the Victoria & Albert Museum and interestingly, this maker used 'metalic' decoration (or in other words platinum lustre) on some of its porcelains. See Godden's Encyclopaedia of British Porcelain Manufacturers (1988), pp.579-585. This fascinating notebook maybe gives us a new Pattern Book Factory and its discovery starts a search for missing links to any of the numbered patterns within its pages. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

KEEP THESE OFF THE U.S.A.WWI Poster (30" x 40")Fine+ on Linen; Artist John Norton Strobridge Litho Co., c.1917This notable WWI propaganda poster designed by John Norton features harrowing imagery of bloodstained cavalry boots, each bearing the tri-colored German armorial insignia of the Imperial Eagle against a stark black background. This poster has had restoration to previous issues, including chipping in all four corners, tiny edge tears, fold wear including separation, and chipping in the center fold cross point. Also four 2-inch tears, two in the lower and two in the left borders, and also a 5-inch tear in the left border. There has been sporadic airbrushing to the borders as well.World War I saw several firsts, but one of the most long-lasting was an extensive and well-planned propaganda campaign to entice American citizens to sign up for the conflict. To stir public support for war overseas, the Division of Pictorial Publicity was formed by the federal government in 1917, enlisting renowned illustrator Charles Dana Gibson (whose "Gibson girl" had defined a generation) to head the effort and recruit essential and well-known artists to the cause. These artists responded enthusiastically and created masterpieces of propaganda, using well-honed advertising industry techniques to develop catchy slogans paired with impactful graphics to inspire resolve, patriotism, and even fear in the minds of the general public. Lot 521

MAD MAXBritish Quad (30" x 40")Very Fine on Linen; Artist Tom Beauvais Columbia-EMI-Warner Bros. , 1979This clean quad has only had slight minor touchups to fold lines, corners and the orange smoke in the center, but otherwise is in fantastic condition and presents impeccably. This low-budget, independently-made dystopian action film, cast with unknown stars, helmed by an unknown, first-time director, and written by a finance journalist crafting his first screenplay, would likely not have been singled out at the time as the beginning of a highly successful franchise and the launching pad for a few remarkable careers, but that's precisely what it did. Mad Max (1979) was the brainchild of George Miller, an emergency room doctor in Sydney, who was intimately familiar with the kinds of injury and death seen in this film about Max Rockatansky (Mel Gibson), a cop-turned-vigilante trying to bring law and order to collapsing society (Miller raised part of the money for this film by doing several months of emergency medical calls). The initial film was followed by three sequels (the first two with Gibson) and continues to be a fan-favorite. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on December 7th.

Lot 522

MAD MAXOne-Sheet (27" x 41")Very Fine- Rolled; Artist Bill Garland American International, 1980This is an original first-release one-sheet of the Mad Max poster which does not have the union logo in the center of the bottom border. Such a mark did not start to appear until late 1982, making any Mad Max poster that does have it a re-release. With art by Australian illustrator Bill Garland, spotlighting a great image of Max in full gear (Gibson was an unknown actor at the time, so it was not considered necessary to show his face). This is a very clean rolled copy for this fan favorite. The poster had tape applied to each corner on the verso, which has left a very faint shadow and is hardly perceptible. Harry Clarke RHA (1889 - 1931) The Colloquy of Monos and Una (1923) Pencil, ink and watercolour, 40 x 29.5cm (15¾ x 11½") Signed with initialsProvenance: Albert Ernest Wood KC (1873 - 1941), Marino, Killiney, Co. Dublin (now known as Abbey Lea, residence of H.E. The Australian Ambassador), thence by descent to the current owners. The title of Edgar Allan Poe’s collection of stories, Tales of Mystery and Imagination, seems to encapsulate the essence of Harry Clarke’s creative vision when it comes to the realm of book Illustration, and so it is no surprise that Clarke was drawn to this volume of strange and macabre tales; his diary entry for 17 March 1914 reveals that as a twenty-five year old he was reading Poe’s classic, already with a view to illustrating them.[1] In 1919 George G. Harrap and Company of London published an edition of Tales of Mystery and Imagination illustrated by Harry Clarke but only featuring black and white images, however this illustration, The Colloquy of Monos and Una, comes from the expanded edition of 1923 which was released with many more illustrations, including eight colour plates for which Clarke was paid £100 by Harrap.[2] The Colloquy of Monos and Una was conceived as a dialogue – or colloquy – between two lovers reunited after death; Una had only just joined Monos in the afterlife and her sombre mind still lingered on the mortal world, preoccupied with the thoughts that had filled her last days on earth, specifically how her lover Monos experienced his final hours. The narrative reflects on philosophical themes such as the relationship between knowledge and perception. Poignantly, while Poe was writing The Colloquy of Monos and Una, his young wife contracted tuberculosis which would eventually kill her – the same disease that would claim Clarke’s life eight years after he created his illustrations for the 1923 edition. Clarke depicts Monos and Una almost as one, with his hand gently supporting her arm, their heads inclined towards each other and almost touching, yet they both seem lost in their individual memories; it is an image that conveys both physical intimacy yet emotional distance. Their wide-eyed features and slender hands, typical of Clarke, emerge from their astonishing Art Deco-influenced costumes – reflecting Clarke’s interest in theatre – with a myriad of pleats, patterns, folds and tassels. Despite the obvious substance of their costumes, the erstwhile lovers hover above the earth, accompanied by a trail of curious companions who disappear into the cosmos. In 1924, a year after the book was published, Harry Clarke sold several of the illustrations he created for Tales of Mystery and Imagination to the Crawford Art Gallery (which acquired them using the Gibson Bequest Fund). Dr David Caron, November 20231. Quoted in Bowe, Nicola Gordon, Harry Clarke, the Life and Work (2015 ed.), p. 69 2. Ibid., p. 208
