Matthias Weischer, der 1973 im westfälischen Elte zur Welt kommt, gilt als einer der Hauptvertreter der figurativen Gegenwartskunst und im Besonderen der `Neuen Leipziger Schule`. Sein Studium absolviert Matthias Weischer zwischen 1995 und 2000 an der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig, wo er anschließend für drei weitere Jahre Meisterschüler von Sighard Gille ist. 2004 erhält Matthias Weischer den Preis der `Rolex Mentor und Meisterschüler Initiative` und wird bis 2005 von David Hockney unterstützt. Bekannt wird Matthias Weischer zunächst durch seine Malerei. In seinen pastosen Interieurs, die eine traditionelle Gattung modernisieren, befragt der Künstler die abstrakten und dimensionalen Strukturen menschenleerer Räumlichkeiten. Auch Verweise auf die Kunstgeschichte lassen sich in diesen, teilweise das Surreale berührenden, Malereien finden. Neben der Malerei stellt auch die Grafik einen wesentlichen Teil des ?uvres dar. Als Matthias Weischer 2007 als Stipendiat in der römischen Villa Massimo arbeitet und seine Tätigkeit immer häufiger in die Natur verlegt, beginnt er, sich verstärkt mit grafischen Ausdrucksmitteln auseinanderzusetzen. In teils auch farbigen Zeichnungen, Radierungen, Linolschnitten und Lithografien entstehen nun, besonders intensiv seit 2010, Landschaften und Innenräume.In seinen pastosen Interieurs, die eine traditionelle Gattung modernisieren, befragt der Künstler die abstrakten und dimensionalen Strukturen menschenleerer Räumlichkeiten. Auch Verweise auf die Kunstgeschichte lassen sich in diesen, teilweise das Surreale berührenden Malereien finden.
