Footnote:The Rev’d John GibsonBorn on 23 July 1815 in Stratford, Essex, the second son of John Gibson, an early Victorian manufacturing chemist, and his wife Ann (Nanny) Harrison. Rev’d Gibson was a scholar-clergyman who became Dean of Jesus College, Cambridge, Chair of the Cambridge Architectural Society and, in 1857, was instituted to the Rectory of King’s Stanley, Gloucestershire. He was instrumental in the Gothic Revival-inspired restoration of the Choir and Tower of Jesus College Chapel, which included input from A W N Pugin and Sir John Sutton, as well as organ cases for churches in this country and continental Europe. He was a personal friend of William Burges who, in 1863, designed a bracelet and other items of jewellery marked simply “Gibson” on the original design sketches now held in the V&A library, London. Pencil annotations state that six of this design were to be executed in silver. According to Burges' diaries, a Birmingham silversmith named Wakeman executed these designs (“Wakeman did Gibson jewly”, Burges’ Abstract of Diaries). We believe this brooch was a gift to the bridesmaids at the Rev’d Gibson’s marriage to Caroline Bendyshe, great-niece of Admiral Lord Nelson, on 28 January 1864 at the church of St James the Less, Parish of St John, Westminster. After their marriage, their friendship continued with Burges visiting Gibson and his wife at King’s Stanley the following year (“To Gibson at Stonehouse”, Burges’ diary abstract). For further information about the Rev’d John Gibson, please see The Revd John Gibson Gothic Revivalist – An Extended Chronology by Philip J Wells. Condition report:All stones are present and secure. The top coral has been reset, with the collet setting a different colour (yellow metal as opposed to white metal to the other three). BRAVEHEART (1995) - Stephen of Ireland's (David O'Hara) Double-Bladed Buckler - Stephen of Ireland's (David O'Hara) double-bladed buckler from Mel Gibson's Braveheart. The leatherette is studded with metal and a piece of tape across the front is hand-marked "Stephen." The weapon is intentionally distressed by production to give it a battle-worn appearance with nicks and grime applied to the metal. The buckler exhibits some discoloration from age. Dimensions: 26" x 9.5" x 3" (66.25 cm x 24.25 cm x 7.75 cm)Blade was dulled by production.Estimate: $2,000 - 4,000Bidding for this lot will end on Wednesday, March 13th. BRAVEHEART (1995) - William Wallace's (Mel Gibson) Screen-Matched Scottish Claymore with Restored Blade - William Wallace's (Mel Gibson) Scottish screen-matched claymore from Gibson's Braveheart with a restored blade. Nicks and production distressing on this sword's pommel screen-match to when Wallace thrust his sword into the ground during the Battle of Falkirk. Images from the fan-favorite moment later inspired the film's promotional campaign.Wallace's signature claymore was designed by noted armorer Simon Atherton and constructed with Del Tin blades based on real-world medieval-era Scottish broadswords. As the real Wallace was believed by some scholars to have wielded a customized sword of his own design, Atherton's version is similarly distinguished by personalized, yet historically accurate, detailing on its pommel and grip. This is believed to be the only known screen-matched example of this memorable weapon's metal handle. The handle features a distinctive cruciform crossguard, a matching scalloped pommel, and a brown leather ricasso and grip. At an indeterminable time, the sword's original blade was removed just below the leather-wrapped ricasso, possibly for a specific effects shot. The sword has been restored to its original appearance by welding a replica metal blade to the ricasso. The replica blade was created from the exact dimensions of another production-used Wallace sword. The sword was intentionally distressed by production with nicks in the guard and pommel and discoloration to the ricasso to appear well-used in battle. It also exhibits some tearing from use. Dimensions: 60.5" x 13.5" x 3" (153.75 cm x 34.5 cm x 7.75 cm)Estimate: $60,000 - 120,000Bidding for this lot will end on Tuesday, March 12th. The auction will begin at 9:00AM PDT and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. William and Murron wrapped a wedding tartan around their hands when the priest (Robert Paterson) wed them in secret.Widely considered one of the greatest war epics of all time, Braveheart received 10 Academy Award® nominations and won five, including Best Picture and Best Director for Gibson. The film also generated a great deal of tourism for Scotland and piqued interest in Scottish history, including into the real lives of Wallace and MacClannough. This red, black, and green wool tartan features a sewn straw "W and "M" for William and Murron alongside a flower-patterned arabesque design sewn with straw. The tartan exhibits intentionally frayed edges and loose thread from production use. Dimensions: 37" x 7" x 0.25" (94 cm x 18 cm x 0.75 cm)Estimate: $12,000 - 24,000Bidding for this lot will end on Tuesday, March 12th.
