A late Victorian silver twin handled tray William Gibson & John Langman, London 1897, the oval tray with repousse border and engraved centre, 23½in. (59.5cm.) long, weight 72.5 tr.oz.* Condition: Some light scratching from use to top surface, some wear to decoration, some scratching to base. Marks clear.

A JAPANESE KOMAI IRON PLATE C.1880 Decorated in nunome zogan (gold and silver inlays) with seven circular panels, the central one depicting a confronting dragon amongst flaming wisps, the others with brocade patterns, kacho-ga (flowers, birds and butterflies) scenes and a landscape with buildings amongst clouds, reserved on a ground of rinzu (textile-weave) designs, the rim with a band of grape vines, the base signed Kyoto no ju Komai sei (Made by Komai of Kyoto), 27.5cm. Provenance: From the collection of Hugh Gibson. Cf. Bonhams, 6th November 2012, lot 501 for a related dish with similar design.
A PAIR OF JAPANESE KOMAI IRON VASES C.1880 The flattened bodies decorated in nunome zogan (gold and silver inlays) with panels of mountainous river landscapes under feather-shaped brocade designs, the rims with grape vine and bands of key fret and the sides with asa-no-ha and other geometrical patterns, both signed Kyoto no ju Komai sei (Made by Komai of Kyoto), 21.4cm. (2) Provenance: From the collection of Hugh Gibson. The landscapes depicted may be inspired by the Omi Hakkei, the traditional eight views of Omi Province where Japan's largest lake is located, a few miles east of Kyoto. Cf. J Earle, Splendors of Meiji, Treasures of Imperial Japan, Masterpieces from the Khalili Collection, pp.58-59 for other Komai vases with similar decoration.
