(Arthur Conan writer 1859-1930) The Story of [S]Pedegue`s Dropper autograph manuscript signed 25pp. slightly browned edges creased with an A.L.s. 1984 from Jean Conan Doyle giving the manuscript to her solicitor “In appreciation of all the help and understanding and loyalty he has given me... in my efforts to protect my father`s words from those who were only interested in their exploitation” and another A.L.s. 4th June 1984 from Richard Lancelyn Green “Thank you very much for letting me read the manuscript...” [cf. Green & Gibson A47] folio [1928]; and a copy of Julian Symons` Portrait of an Artist: Conan Doyle signed presentation copy from Jean Conan Doyle with corrections 1979 folio & 8vo (2). *** Conan Doyle`s cricket story. First published in the Strand Magazine in 1928 and later published in book form in The Maracot Deep and Other Stories John Murray [1929]. There are a few textual changes in this manuscript the story is titled “The Story of Pedegue`s Dropper” and Richard Lancelyn Green in his letter notes that “it is curious that Sir Arthur ceased numbering the pages after 20 & spelt Sydney `Sidney`“. “`The Story of Spedegue`s Dropper` was based on the author`s own experience when bowled by a most extraordinary ball from A.P. Lucas. It was propelled into the air to about thirty feet and then fell onto the top of the bails. It was an experience which also gave him the idea for high-angle fire so that the bullets might enter enemy trenches.” - Green & Gibson. Condition report: Surface dust marginal handling creases and short tears.
Shaw (Stebbing) A Series of Engravings from Shaw`s with a set of the Unpublished Plates which were prepared for the Continuation 119 engraved plates two double-page some with two or more illustrations some with added aquatint a few plates slightly spotted mainly in margins contemporary half russia g.e. hinges strengthened with the bookplates of Sir Edric Walseley and Hugh Hernshall Williamson large folio Henry Kent Causton [dated on spine 1854]. *** No other copies of this set of plates have been traced. The list of engravings calls for 125 in all including 29 not previously published. Those not present are numbered in the list as 37 49 69 70 95 and 96. These were all amongst the plates that had been borrowed from other publications. In addition this volume contains a large lithographed view of timber-framed buildings in Greengate Street Litchfield after John Robert Fernyhough; an engraved portrait of David Garrick by William Skelton after Robert Edge Pine 1818; mezzotint portraits of Samuel Johnson by C. Townley after Opie 1792; Lieut. Colonel Biddulph by Thomas Watson after Anthony Poggi; the Rev. Sambrooke Higgins by John Young after T. Barber; and Sir John Bowyer by T. Smith after T. Gibson; and engraved ground plan and 9 aquatint views of Lichfield Cathedral published by C. Wild 1813.
