The ledger may have been kept by a second party, possibly a Steward of the estate, as it has been periodically checked and signed off by Pettiward. Under expenditure items such as 'Doz. Port Wine - £1. 4s'; Boots - £1.7s; Fletcher for dinner £4.2s.6d; Gibson, Saddler, £1.12s; 6 Views of Switzerland, £4.14s; Entrance Suffolk Club, £1.1s; Clarke for Horses to Xmas 1791, £22. 6s; Knight for Books, £6.10s; Maidservant, £3.3s.' and many other details relating to his activities are recorded. There are extensive entries for some months, less for others when he is travelling. A substantial income is also recorded in less detail. There are entries on the front paste-down relating to the recruitment of Grooms (on basis of references supplied) at the annual rate of 20 Guineas and half a crown travelling wages. Altogether a unique and fascinating insight into the life and activities of an 18thC. Gentleman. Vg.
