Before, however, the marriage took place, she inherited a small fortune, and rejected Beattie for William Smart, a successful corn merchant. A Russian silver and enamel desk clock by Fabergé, workmaster Michael Perchin, Kokoshnik mark for St. Petersburg 1899-1908, assay master Yakov Lyapunov (1899-1903), 88 zolotniks, the white circular enamel dial with black Arabic numerals and gold Louis hands, within a purple guilloche enamel mount with yellow and rose gold laurel wreath and ribbon spandrels at each corner, the Swiss double barrelled bar movement by Hy. Moser, no. 67304, with bimetallic spilt balance overcoil coil balance spring, the movement mount no. 304, with an ivory back and scrolled easel, the frame mount signed Fabergé in cyrillic with Michael Perchin’s workmaster’s mark and scratch numbered 3490 and 14.7.22, the clock back and easel stand with Michael Perchin’s workmaster’s mark and scratch numbered 26826, 9.2cm (3.75in) high, in a fitted holly wood Fabergé case, the silk lining with Fabergé’s retailer’s mark (two gold spandrels lacking, one damaged). Provenance: The gift of The Hon Charlotte Knollys, Woman of the Bedchamber to Queen Alexandra and her most intimate friend and confidante, to Mrs Mrs Putnam Gibson and thence by descent. The Hon Charlotte Knollys saved the Queen’s life from a fire at Sandringham in 1907 and was present at her death after fifty-five years of “affectionate and unswerving loyalty”.

Rare, bold green fountain pen ink signature on a piece, neatly laid down to a page removed from an autograph album alongside a newspaper portrait of Gibson and neat typed quotation by collector etc. VG
GIBSON GUY: (1918-1944) British Airman of World War II, Wing Commander of 617 Squadron. Victoria Cross winner for his actions during Operation Chastise (The Dambusters Raid) on the Mohne and Eder Dams in Germany, 16th May 1943. Rare D.S., Guy P. Gibson, one page, oblong 8vo, n.p. (Lincolnshire), 17th June 1944. The partially printed document is an application form for membership of The Thirty Club in Skegness. Gibson has completed part of the form in his own hand, giving his full name, rank and address at RAF Spilby (sic) E(ast) Kirkby. Signed at the base by Gibson and countersigned by an official of the club. An ink date to the side indicates that Gibson was granted honorary membership on 19th June 1944, exactly three months before his tragic death. Together with a similar D.S. by William Reid (1921-2001) Scottish Pilot of RAF Bomber Command during World War II, Victoria Cross winner. Reid`s application for membership of The Thirty Club was made on 24th January 1944 and he too was granted honorary membership on 26th January 1944. Both documents are neatly mounted. Some light overall age toning, about VG, 2 The Thirty Club was one of the most popular entertainment venues in Skegness during World War II and finally closed in 1974.
GIBSON GUY: (1918-1944) British Airman of World War II, Wing Commander of 617 Squadron. Victoria Cross winner for his actions during Operation Chastise (The Dambusters Raid) on the Mohne and Eder Dams in Germany, 16th May 1943. Vintage signed and inscribed 4.5 x 6 photograph, a good image of the smiling Gibson seated in a half length pose wearing his RAF uniform and holding a pipe in one hand. Signed in fountain pen ink across the image, `To Ben Twigg, with my kindest personal regards, yours, Guy P. Gibson W/C` and dated 15th September 1944 in his hand. The inscription and signature run across a darker area of the image although remain legible. Extremely rare in this form. One very small area of paper loss to the lower white border and some very minor, light surface creasing, about VG Gibson signed and dated this photograph for his friend just four days before the 26 year old Victoria Cross hero was tragically killed in an aeroplane crash at Steenburgen, Holland.
