To Be Sold With No ReserveA lustreware moulded pottery figure of an elephant,Kashan, Iran, 1150-1220ADThe elephant depicted with elongated and misshapen body, flattened ears, and cylindrical legs, with moulded tail and tusks, his trunk missing the end, he wears a moulded and decorated saddle cloth, decorated all over in lustre with scrolling and vegetal designs and pseudo-inscriptions, with highlights in cobalt to forehead and outline of saddlecloth, 32cm. long x 20cm highProvenance: Private UK Collection acquired prior to 1979 Footnotes: Figures of elephants from Iran in the late 12 and early 13th century are numerous. Mainly turquoise-glazed, they tend to depict elephant bodies as slightly misshapen, either very round or quite long, indicating the potters unfamiliarity with real elephants.  They also carry a howdah, missing in our example. Other examples are in Chicago, Oriental Institute RH 6105 (Excavated at Rayy by E. F. Schmidt in 1935); Sotheby’s, Islamic Art, Glass, Textiles, Carpets, Woodwork, Metalwork, 2/5/1977, lot 180; Sotheby’s, Islamic Works of Art Carpets and Textiles, 19/10/1983, lot 136; Metropolitan Museum of Art 65.109.1; Tokyo, Sazu Idemitsu Collection (Mikami: 196, no.54.)  With thanks to Dr Melanie Gibson for her assistance with the research notes to this lot. Condition Report: Restored areas, in particular to saddlecloth and legs with breaks, under UV the elephant appears to show a consistency all over with purple areas to legs around breaks
