Dr David Livingstone (1813-1873) - Travel/Exploration, Africa, The Zanzibar Expedition 1873-1874 - an almost unique silver-mounted polished specimen hardwood memento mori, reputedly from the bier that carried the body of Dr Livingstone, inlaid with a crucifix, plain to verso, the mount inscribed: Dr Livingstone, Zanzibar, 1874, 4.5cm x 3.1cm On the death of the renowned Victorian explorer and missionary Dr Livingstone at the age of 60, in 1873, at Chief Chitambo's village at Ilala, south-east of Lake Bangweulu, in present-day Zambia, from malaria and internal bleeding caused by dysentery, his final adventure commenced. It took nearly a year for Livingstone's body to return home for his state funeral at Westminster Abbey in April 1874 which, after his loyal attendants Chuma and Susi removed his heart and buried it by a tree near the spot where he died, included being embalmed and traversing over 1,000 miles to the coastal town of Bagamoyo, present-day Tanzania, before he and his last manuscripts were shipped to Zanzibar and then, after interference from Sultan Barghash bin Said had de-escalated due to the Anglo-Zanzibari Treaty of 1873, back to England for a fitting establishment funeral. Provenance: 30817A, Lieutenant-Commander Thomas Gibson Mobbs, R.N. (1848-1936), presented to Mobbs as a young man after escorting Dr Livingstone's body back from Africa; then by direct family descent and repute, accompanied by two photocopied photographic portraits of the elder Mobbs, a photocopied letter by Mobbs and a photocopied obituary notice, supplied from originals the family have chosen to retain.
