Crane Kalman Gallery, 178 Brompton Road, London, exhibition date December 1988 Ex. private collection, London Mr & Mrs W K Gibson There is an unfinished study of the artist`s child with plant pots and flowers on the reverse of the picture Winifred Nicholson: Born in Oxford, she attended the Byam Shaw School of Art, then studied art in Paris, Lugano, India and the Hebrides. Participated in extensive mixed exhibitions throughout her lift, initially as Winifred Roberts (her maiden name). She married Ben Nicholson in 1920 and had her first one-man show at the Mayor Gallery as Winifred Nicholson in 1925. She was a member of the 7 & 5 Society 19125-35 and the NEAC 1937-43. She was the mother of artist Kate Nicholson. She contributed to Circle, International Survey of Constructive Art in 1936 and designed a "constructive" fabric for Alistair Morton`s Edinburgh Weavers in the same year as Winifred Dacre, and under the same name showed four abstract works in an Exhibition of Constructive Art at the London Gallery. She travelled widely, showing pictures in Morocco, Greece, Cornwall and Cumbria. Her later works were concerned with prismatic colour experiments. She exhibited internationally, and her pictures are held by many public galleries, including The Tate Gallery, Bristol, Bradford, Adelaide and Melbourne. She lived at Brampton in Cumbria. A major exhibition toured from the Tate in 1987-8. See Buckman (David) The Directory of Artists in Britain since 1945.

Steven A Nash, Chief Curator of the Allbright-Knox Gallery, Buffalo, New York wrote in September 1977 This is an important and beautiful work, sold together with copies of correspondence relating to the work. The collection of Mr W K Gibson, Richmond, Yorkshire The picture bears the inscription "Belonging to Winifred Nicholson" on the stretcher verso Ben Nicholson: Born in Denham, Bucks, the son of the painter William Nicholson. His first wife was the painter Winifred Nicholson, his second the sculptor Barbara Hepworth, the artists Kate, Simon and Rachel Nicholson were his children. Studied at Slade School of Fine Art 1910-11, then travelled to Europe 1911-14. Further travels, partly because of his health, took him to Madeira, America, Italy and France. First one-man show at Adelphi Gallery in 1922. A member of the 7 & 5 Society. First visit to Cornwall with Christopher Wood, where they discovered the painter Alfred Wallis, 198. This was a key influence on his work, as were meetings in Paris with Arp, Brancusi, Picasso, Miró and Mondrian in the early 1930`s. In 1933 he joined Abstraction-Création and made his first reliefs. Co-editor of Circle in 1937. From 1939-58 he lived in St Ives, being a founder member of Penwith Society of Arts. In the 1950`s he began to consolidate his international reputation, exhibiting widely abroad, winning a number of prizes, and having a series of retrospective exhibitions. He was awarded the Order of Merit in 1968. He lived in Switzerland for many years from 1958, but returned to England in the early 1970`s, dying in London. His pictures and reliefs are distinguished by their deceptive simplicity and meticulous employment of colour and shape.
