Two fragments with a Hebrew Piyyut - and a text in Judeo-Arabic, manuscripts on Oriental paper [Near East (liturgical poem) and a text in Judeo-Arabic, manuscripts on Oriental paper [Near East, thirteenth century] Two large fragments: (i) Adonai Negdekha kol Ta'avati, a Piyyut (a liturgical poem recited in the Sephardic liturgy on Yom Kippur) by Judah Halevi (c.1075-1141), the great Spanish Jewish poet and one of the most prolific Hebrew poets of the Middle Ages, remains of single column, 23 lines in a semi-cursive Oriental script, a further 5 lines on reverse, torn and frayed at outermost and lowest edges, but legible and presentable, 200mm. by 90mm.; (b) Judeo-Arabic text, remains of single column, 14 lines, tears to edges with losses of text from there and centre of leaf, 145mm. by 125mm.; both set in glass Probably from the bibliophilic treasure trove of the Cairo Genizah, discovered in 1891 during renovations to the Ben Ezra Synagogue of Fustat (Old Cairo). Fragments from this were initially sold to tourists and collectors, with many, presumably like this, leaving the genizah in the earliest years after its discovery. Once fragments reached the hands of the early Bible hunting twins, Agnes Lewis and Margaret Gibson, scholarly interest focussed on this prize, and a rescue mission to secure the rest of the archive for Cambridge University (now the Solomon Schechter Institute there) was launched.
