* WWI - Attack on Scarborough. An autograph letter signed by N.[?] Gibson [proprietor of] Gibson`s Boarding-House and Private Hotel, Queens Parade, North Cliff, Scarborough, 18th December 1914, to Mr. Bulman, thanking him for his enquiry and reporting that this family and property are all untouched, `It was all a bit of a fright whilst it lasted, but the town was remarkably calm, a short while afterwards. You must not take all for granted that you read in the papers. There were about 120 to 150 shells fired onto the town. Seventeen persons are killed. Forty wounded. The damage is difficult to estimate, but will cost probably 20,000 to 30,000 pounds to replace. The following is a draft diagram showing how the two chief ships approached and left. The bombardment lasted 20 minutes, followed by a pen and ink diagram with blue pencil and then continuing `you will see that the firing commenced directly opposite our house. The ships when passing round the castle were not more than 600 yards from the shore. The [circle] on the diagram means that there were firing salvos or broadsides`, now continuing on a second identical sheet of letterhead with b & w photo illustration of Gibson`s Boarding House, this second sheet more heavily soiled and with some text now indistinct or missing, `One last shell burst on the roadway that leads down to the sands directly opposite our hourse, this one I think was nearest for us. One also fell in the Clarence Gardens opposite the Queens Hotel Hydro and three fell in the Alexandra Gardens, which were meant for the Alexandra Gardens Hotel, both sheets somewhat soiled and a little frayed on folds, second sheet with tape repair to horizontal fold and loss of one line of text supplied in pencil in a later hand above, 4to. On 16th December 1914 the east coast towns of Scarborough, Whitby and Hartlepool were attacked by the German Navy. In Scarborough nineteen people were killed, the Lighthouse was destroyed and further damage was done to the Royal Hotel, Grand Hotel and the Town Hall. (1)

Squadron Leader Les Munro, CNZM, DSO, QSO, DFC, JP. Warrant Officer Norman Cyril Jackson, VC. Wing Commander Roderick Alastair Brook Learoyd, VC. On 16th May 1943 nineteen Lancasters of 617 Squadron under the leadership of Wing Commander Guy Gibson attacked the Moehne, Eder and Sorpe Dams which provided water for the great armament industries of the German Ruhr. The dam faces of the Moehne and Eder were smashed and vast flood waters released. On arrival at the Moehne Dam, Gibson attacked first and scored a direct hit with his Barnes Wallis bouncing bomb. The next aircraft in was hit by flak, and blew up crashing just beyond the dam. Robert Taylor`s print shows the number three aircraft, piloted by Flight Lieutenant Mick Martin making his determined run in, just releasing his bouncing bomb and heading through the devensive curtain of gunfire. Guy Gibson`s aircraft is flying in front and to the starboard of Martin`s in an effort to distract the flak. In spite of this Martin collected a shell right through a wing tank, but his bomb scored another direct hit. Gibson and Martin, then flew in with each of the two successive attacks either distracting the defences of attempting to suppress them with fire from their own air-gunners. The cumulative effect of the fourth direct hit breached the Dam and 150,000,000 gallons flooded the Ruhr valley washing away factories, railway bridges, electric pylons but above all greatly reducing water supplies, necessary to the armament industrial processes. The total cost of the overall operation to 617 Squadron was 56 members lost from 133 original flyers, and eight Lancasters destroyed and four damaged. Gibson was awarded the VC and 32 other aircrew were decorated for this most famous of all air offensive actions. Visit www.dnfa.com for condition reports
