â–´ Edward Bawden RA (1903-1989)'The Blue Tractor'linocut in colours, 1962, signed 'Edward Bawden' in pen l.r.sheet 56 x 80.5cmExhibited: The Minories, Colchester, 'The World of Edward Bawden', 1973, catalogue no.77.Here we see the Market Place in Saffron Walden with the building of Gibson & Co. Bank, latterly Barclays Bank. This is one of the most inventive linocuts Bawden created with the imposing blue tractor and plough which jumps out of this everyday scene with its colossal size. Although artist licence has been used for the perspective, this would have been a well-known sight to residents as the machinery belonged to a local agricultural firm which were regularly seen on Tuesday's market day.The 'Blue Plough' was the name given to a copy at the 1963 exhibition at the Zwemmer Gallery as well as at the Fry Art Gallery, but this has not been seen inscribed on a print. Unusually, the linocut fills the paper, leaving no unprinted margins. Any inscriptions for this work are within the printed area. Condition ReportFramed size 79 x 101cmSheet is taped to black mount board along the top edge. Leaving tape on back on print. Print is currently very closely held against to glass. This will be able to be carefully removed, however we are are reluctant to pull it and cause any damage before the sale. Lower right hand corner has tiny fold to it. When viewing the back of the print, light creasing can be seen in lower right of image, lower left and upper right. A copy of the Daily Telegraph - Thursday June 13 1974, found inside frame. Please see additional images online.

SCARCE & COLLECTIBLE AMERICAN CELLO BY GIBSON, c. 1942, model no. G110-842, paper label, L.O.B. 75.5cmsProvenance: private collection mid-Wales, consigned via our Cardiff officeComments: repaired split, varnish wear.Auctioneer's Note:Gibson ventured into the manufacture of violin-family instruments for a short period in the second half of the 1930s, ending in the early 1940s. Since supplies of commercial violins from Germany and Japan were unavailable due to the war, American manufacturers were protected for a time from this previously well-established overseas competition. Gibson-made cellos are rare and this example has some unusual features of construction borrowed from the company’s guitar-making heritage.

Holme CardwellA carved white marble group of a classical shepherd youthRome, mid 19th centurysigned Holme Cardwell Fecit, Roma and indistinctly dated on later stone rectangular plinththe figure 116cm high, the plinth 77cm high by 71cm wide by 48cm deepProvenance; The residual contents of Bixley Manor by instructions of the executors of Sir Timothy Colman KG.  Holme Cardwell, a native of Manchester, attended the Royal Academy School in London in 1834. Probably aged 19 (although there is some uncertainty over his year of birth, his gravestone registers 20 May 1813), he was recommended to the school by Sir Francis Chantrey RA. Building a considerable reputation for himself, including a silver medal for a model in 1839, he left London for Paris in 1841 to study with David d’Angers (1788-1856). He probably stayed in Paris for three years, training at the Académie Royale, before moving to Rome. In the following years of his career, he was to move between Rome and London several times, settling primarily in Rome. Active within the milieu of British expatriate artists and sculptors in Rome, he acquired many admirers, including the renowned sculptor John Gibson RA (1790-1866). Cardwell exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1837 and 1856. He had a tendency for large or monumental marble groups, including the ‘colossal’ Good Samaritan (Roscoe, op. cit., p. 194), a figure of Sabrina, and a Cupid and Pan. The treatment of this neoclassical youth shows similarities to John Gibson, who was an admirer of Cardwell’s work and Joseph Gott, 1785-1860 both of whom were similarly working in Rome in the mid 19th century executing commissions for English aristocracy doing the Grand Tour. Joseph Gott in particular, was renowned for his realistic portrayal of dogs, most especially whippets and greyhounds, which he often incorporated into classical groups as in this charming composition in which an Arcadian shepherd leans languorously on a staff with a dog gazing wistfully up at his master. Garden StatuarySculpture

Andy Warhol. Interview. New York, Eigenverlag / Brant Publ., 1969-1989. Folio. Vast collection of 159 numbers of the legendary pop-art magazine from the first 19 years of its existence. Original illustrated wrappers (rubbed, bumped, a few covers with ball pen marginalia). Loosely inserted in 18 new chemises in bright colours in 18 blue cardboard slipcases. - See above for a listing of some of the early numbers. - The covers with colour offset portraits partially by Richard F. Bernstein among others as listed above. - This is a hard-to-find set without duplicates of the legendary magazine Andy Warhol self-published from 1969 during the greatest period of his Factory. Originally based on Warhol's tape recordings of parties, the mostly unedited "interviews" in written form, combined with large-format graphic advertisements and photos, offer a brilliant insight into the - not only New York - cultural scene of the time and what moved the Factory's employees, guests and muses. Alongside Warhol, other celebrities such as Bianca Jagger or Truman Capote later increasingly wrote their own contributions. In the 1980s, Warhol left the management of the magazine to Bob Colacello, under whose influence it gradually transformed into a fashion magazine. - A set hardly to be obtained in this quantity any more without duplicates. - Uncut, some browning due to paper, partially with foldmarks and backed defects, otherwise overall very well preserved.
