An important aviation group of medals and service log book and associated paperwork awarded to Albert Hart Crowe, comprising of Distinguished Flying Cross dated 1943 with Bar, 1953 Air Force Cross, 39 - 45 Star, Aircrew Europe Star with France and Germany clasp, Africa Star, Italy Star, War and Defence medals with full service pilots flying logbook service number 569307, first dated entry 30th June 1941. Albert Crowe trained as a pilot in June and July of 1941, later becoming flight lieutenant. Crowe was predominantly a Lancaster bomber pilot during WWII in 106 squadron. His pilots logbook includes multiple signatures from Guy Gibson and other Dambuster pilots including Hopgood etc including written comments from Guy Gibson "completed his first operational tour with extremely successful results, an excellent show - Guy Gibson W/C". Various photographs, paperwork and citations including confirmed target destroyed, caricatures, pay slips etc. During WWII Crowe completed 51 sorties and completed a total of 305 hours 55 minutes operational hours bombing various targets including Italy and Germany, including a bombing raid on Dusseldorf where Crowe was engaged by an enemy fighter and successfully managed to manoeuvre the plane to enable his gunners to shoot it down. Daylight bombing raids, bombing raids at 4000 feet, and details of Crowe's successful landing of Lancaster after taking off an engine catching fire at night with a full bomb load are also recorded. He successfully managed to land the plane with no casualties lost or any major damage. At the completion of WWII Crowe entered the Empire Flying School and became a test pilot for early jet planes where he received the Air Force Cross, which included flying jets into thunder storms to assess damage caused. The log book lists a vast array of aircraft flown and his exceptional skills as a pilot. Crowe later moved to the United States of America where he lectured and published a book 'Aircraft Engines and Systems' (copy included) and died in America on the 16th October, 1997. The lot includes commission certificates, full service log book, photographs, medal recommendations, copies of newspaper cuttings, paperwork from the Ministry of Defence relating to Albert Crowe's service history, a copy of one of his reports from Guy Gibson, includes "This officer has taken part in a total of 34 sorties on enemy territory. Apart from the many industrial areas he has attacked he has flown on mining sorties raiding from the Baltic to Southern France, all have been successful. His two most outstanding sorties were a daylight raid on Le Creusot when he kept formation with his squadron commander in the most adverse weather conditions, and the daylight raid on Milan where he bombed from 6000 feet. Pilot Officer Crowe has pressed home his attacks in the face of heavy opposition and throughout his operational tour has shown qualities of a splendid courage and determination." "I consider that S/LDR Crowe's fine operational record and his courage, skill and determination fully merit the reward of a Bar to the Distinguished Flying Cross." "On one occasion when detailed to bomb Dusseldorf his aircraft was attacked by an enemy fighter but his skillful airmanship and crew cooperation he enabled his gunners to engage the enemy aircraft which was claimed as destroyed. On another occasion when taking off to attack Hamburg an engine cut out and caught fire. This officers coolness and fine airmanship resulted in his effecting a safe landing in the dark on three engines with a full bomb load. In recognition of his skilful handling of a grave situation he was on this occasion credited with sortie completed."
