WW2 The Channel Dash 50th cover signed by Two Swordfish pilots who flew against the German Battle ships, scarce variety signed by Lt Cdr Charles Kingsmill DSO and Cdr Edgar Lee DSO. Charles Major Kingsmill, naval aviator/ For courage in the face of overwhelming odds, few examples match that of the brave crews of 825 Swordfish Squadron. Their ill-fated but inspiring attack on the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau during their Channel dash on 12 February 1942 earned them legendary status within naval history. Pat Kingsmill was one of those brave pilots. He flew into devastating fire not only from the two battlecruisers and their escorting convoy, but from a formidable array of Focke-Wulf 190s. Yet he continued his attack and launched his torpedo before being shot down. The valour of these six aircrews was recognised when Lt-Cdr Eugene Esmond, who had led the raid, was awarded a posthumous VC. Pat Kingsmill, one of only five survivors of the raid, was awarded a DSO. Admiral Sir Bertram Ramsey, Flag Officer in Charge, Dover, signalled: "In my opinion, the gallant sortie of six Swordfish constituted one of the finest exhibitions of self-sacrifice and devotion to duty that the war has yet witnessed. Edgar Lee Joined the Royal Navy in May 1940, two days before his nineteenth birthday and after initial training began a flying course in Trinidad in September 1940. He qualified as Observer in April 1941 and was commissioned as Midshipman (A) RNVR. Promoted to Sub-Lieutenant (A) RNVR at the age of 20 in May 1941 and appointed to 825 Squadron in HMS Ark Royal in June 1941, flying operationally with 825 Squadron in Swordfish TBR until the Ark Royal was sunk in November 1941. Edgar returned to England and the squadron reformed at Lee-on-Solent - again in Swordfish in late December 1941, still under the command of Lt Commander E Esmonde DSO, RM. He took part in the Channel attack on the Scharnhorst and Gniesenau on 12th February 1942. All the aircraft were shot down, with only five survivors; Edgar and his pilot were rescued from a dingy by MTB. He joined the new 825 Squadron in March 1942 and flew in that squadron until July 1942, then sent for re-posting to RNAS St Merryn on Flying Control duties. At the end of February 1943, Edgar was seconded to 106 Squadron RAF Bomber Command, flying in Lancaster, under the command of Wing Commander Guy Gibson, DSO DFC RAF. Six Naval Observers were seconded to 5 Group Bomber Command, three were lost and three returned to naval duties at the end of July 1943. Edgar was promoted to Lieutenant (A) RNVR in November 1943. Instructing in Canada, August 1943 to November 1944 and returned to England to qualify as a Signals Officer in August 1945. From Staff Signals Officer to Rear Admiral reserve Aircraft from September 1945 until demob in July 1947. Edgar rejoined the reserve in 1956 and was promoted to Lt Cdr RNR in November 1961 serving in most NATO and National exercises until 1981 and as Acting Commander RNR in exercises from 1969 until retirement at 60 in 1981. Sadly Lieutenant-Commander Edgar Lee died on October 29th, 2009, aged 88. Edgar Lee was the last surviving member of those gallant aircrew of 825 Squadron Fleet Air Arm that in February 1942 made the attack in Swordfish torpedo bombers on the German battlecruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau accompanied by the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen. After John Gibson RA (1790-1866): A White Marble Bas-Relief Plaque Worked with a Profile Portrait of the Maharajah Duleep Singh, facing to dexter on a circular ground, titled50cm diameterThis bas-relief plaque is derived from the famous bust sculpted in Rome by John Gibson whilst the Maharajah was on a trip to city with the Prince of Wales. In her diary Lady Login, the Maharajah’s guardian, recorded the visit to Gibson’s studio on 13th June 1857 The Last Maharajah Of The PunjabMaharajah Duleep Singh was born in Lahore in 1838, into the affluent court of the Sikh Kingdom. Following the death of his father, the Maharajah Ranjit Singh, the ‘Lion of the Punjab’, Duleep Singh was declared Maharaja at the incredibly young age of five years old. However, the British East India Company were quick to exploit this situation and the two ensuing Anglo-Sikh wars resulted in the Company taking control of the Punjab. Following the annexation of the Punjab in 1849, Duleep Singh signed the Treaty of Lahore which saw Singh ‘resign for himself, his heirs, and his successors all right, title, and claim to the sovereignty of the Punjab, or to any sovereign power whatever. The still young Duleep Singh was moved from the Punjab to Mussoorie, to be placed in the care of a Scottish surgeon Sir John Spencer Login of the East India Company, where he converted to Christianity and played cricket in an effort to become an archetypal English gentleman. Anglicisation was soon followed by his move to England in 1854 where he received a pension of £25,000 a year provided he ‘remain obedient to the British Government’. Queen Victoria was enraptured by Singh and is recorded as saying “[He is] extremely handsome and speaks English perfectly… and has a pretty, graceful and dignified manner”, upon meeting him in 1854. Despite Queen Victoria’s attempts at matchmaking Singh with other outcast Indian princesses, he married Bamba Muller, daughter of a Coptic Christian Ethiopian and a German Merchant, whom he had met in Cairo. The pair lived on a vast and lavish shooting estate, Elvenden in Norfolk, which was modelled in the Orientalist style. Queen Victoria became godmother to three of Singh’s children, Prince Victor and Princesses Catherine and Sophia, and he would be a frequent visitor to Osborne and Windsor Castle. His later years were restless as he increasingly became disaffected with the British and reverted to his former faith, Sikhism. Despite best efforts to reclaim the Punjab, he died in Paris in 1893 after suffering a stroke, but not without reconciling with Queen Victoria who pardoned him for his hostility towards the British Government in his later years. The plaque free from repair. Expected edge chips, mainly to the reverse. Some other slight edge chips. General wear and some engrained dirst. Provenance; a UK base private collector of Sikh and Indian art, bought from the private collection of a dealer in similar items

Harriet Goodhue Hosmer (American, 1830-1908): A carved white marble figure of 'Puck' together with an unsigned companion pendant figure of 'Will o the Wisp' (third version)Circa 1864The figure of Puck seated on a toadstool, with scallop shell headdress and bats-wings, holding a stag beetle in his right hand, his left hand resting on a lizard, on oak leaf square plinth base, titled to the front and signed to the rear H. Hosmer Fecit Roma, the figure of Will o the Wisp with flaming curling hair and bats-wings seated on an acanthus leaf rusticated pedestal and titled square plinth base, the toe of the former now lacking and the finger to the latter detached but present 81.5cm and 78cm high respectively (2)Footnotes:ProvenancePhillips Son & Neal, Contents of Park Hall, Hayfield, Derbyshire, 5th April 1978.The present lot, comprising a pair of figures, one signed, the other unsigned but similarly attributed, are from a series of playful compositions by America's foremost female Neoclassical sculptor of the 19th century, Harriet Hosmer, based on themes of mystical folklore and playful literature. Hosmer created several conceptions in marble examining the idea of 'the fairy', with her depiction of Shakespeare's 'Puck' from A Midsummer Night's Dream perhaps being the most well-known of these which was conceived and first executed in 1855. The figure was to become so popular that it was replicated over thirty times. Copies were commissioned by a number of Royal patrons including Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) who visited Hosmer's studio in Rome and ordered a Puck for his rooms at Oxford. The sculptures were purposely designed on a small scale specifically for multiple replications in order appeal to upper-middle class patrons to grace their drawing rooms and parlours. The whimsical treatment of the subject matter however as married with high quality of workmanship which was intended to appeal to the most demanding of British and American clientsBy the time, Hosmer conceived the first of her three variations of her pendant figure to 'Puck', the figure of 'Will o' the Wisp'(from 1856, 1858 and 1864) she was on her way to becoming one of the most renowned and admired professional sculptors of her day, not only in American but also in Europe. Born in Watertown, Massachusetts, Hosmer's mother and three siblings died during her childhood. Despite being a delicate child she was encouraged and mentored by her physician father, Hiram Hosmer, to pursue a life outside the constraints of female society. As a result, and most unusually, she had a full academic education, physical training and was widely travelled. Hosmer's father encouraged her artistic vision and supported her wish to go to Rome to become the pupil of the sculptor John Gibson. When in Rome, Hosmer became friends with the ex-pat colony of European artists and writers that included Bertel Thorvaldsen, William Makepeace Thackeray Georges Eliot and George Sand. In Florence she was the frequent guest of Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning. She also importantly nurtured the talents of a group of American female artists which included Edmonia Lewis, Anne Whitney, Emma Stebbins and Vinnie Ream. It was this circle which the writer Henry James later called 'a sisterhood of American lady sculptors'.LiteratureSherwood, Dolly, Harriet Hosmer: American Sculptor, 1830-1908, Pub.
