The case 650mm diameter, with a champlevé and guilloché enamel monogram to the front cover 'R.M.' in royal blue, sky blue, red and white, to an hand engraved scrolling ground. The back case with a crest and 'Om' in Sanskrit, above the seal of the Theosophical Society composed of a star of David, an ankh, a swastika positive, and an ouroboros with cabochon ruby eye and ribbon below, with a motto believed to read 'there is no religion (or law) higher than truth' to a matching engraved ground. A white enamel dial with black Roman numerals, gold spade hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and a subsidiary power reserve dial. Movement no. 55340 signed 'Special Warrants to HM The Queen and HRH The Prince of Wales, J.W. Benson 62-64 Ludgate Hill, London'. A fitted satinwood case with pierced and engraved silver corners and a silver cartouche with matching hand engraved crest and Theosophical Seal. Commission letter from J W Benson, addressed to Calcutta and dated 1890, concerning the proposed designs to the engraved cartouche and monogram. 259.36gCondition report: Weight is 259.36g not 359.36g (typo)65mm diameter.A very large example.Tarnish to the silver corners and escutcheon, the residue of polish between the fretwork.Scratches and marks to the wooden case. The watch was invoiced to Messrs Oster Setzer in Milan, Longines agents in Italy on 09/01/1939.Our own research suggests this was a prototype produced in early 1939, from conversions of pocket watches to strap/wristwatches.Light surface marks to the case.More at the opening lip.The lugs are a little more crude, consistent with this being the transition from open faced pocket watch to wristwatch.Light surface wear to the hinged back.Scratches to inside case at cuvette, more at lip. A bit chewed.
