Railway or railroad watches were specialised and accurate timepieces once used to ensure the safe operation of trains. Regulations regarding the watches used by critical personnel on the railroads (engineer, conductor, switch yard controllers, etc.) were specified almost from the beginning of widespread railroad use in the 1850s and 1860s, and these watches had a number of minimum requirements including open faced dials, maximum variation of 30 seconds per week, a lever used to set the time, minimum dial diameter and bold, large numerals.

In 1915 the company was reorganised as Schild & Cie. and the patents were transferred from Graizely. Schild continued to produce 8 day pocket watches in a wide variety of shapes and designs, including an unusual variety with a folding stand - this example. All Hebdomas watches are manufactured entirely by hand. The high standard of quality is rooted not only in the experience of their highly skilled watchmakers but also in the remembrance of ancient customs linked to the 'cycle of seven', which is the key number that made the company famous throughout the world.Case: Generally in fair to good condition.
