Schild & Cie. - A silver 'Hebdomas' 8 day open faced pocket watch, circa 1915, the signed white dial with gold coloured decoration, 40mm diameter, with visible balance, black Roman numerals, blued spade and whip hands and gold coloured dot minute track, mechanical crown wind 8 day movement with mainspring and barrel across the full width of the movement and onion shaped winder, case, 48mm diameter, verso hinged at 6 o'clock decorated with floral engraving around a central vacant escutcheon shaped cartouche, interior numbered 590180 with London import marks for Sterling silver and sponsor's mark of De Pury, Gautschi & Company (George Guillaume Gautschi), 85.6g gross In 1889 Arthur Graizely bought a patent for a watch movement capable of running for 15 days without winding, founded the firm 'Graizely Frères' and started production.In fact, the movement only ran for about 7 days and not 15, and so was given the name 'Hebdomas' (pronounced 'heb-doh-mass') from the Latin meaning the number 7, a week, 7 days or the seventh day.The success of these watches in the 1900s was unbelievable, and several unique pieces are still to be found in private collections all over the world. In 1915 the company was reorganised as Schild & Cie. and the patents were transferred from Graizely. Schild continued to produce 8 day pocket watches in a wide variety of shapes and designs.All Hebdomas watches are manufactured entirely by hand. The high standard of quality is rooted not only in the experience of their highly skilled watchmakers but also in the remembrance of ancient customs linked to the 'cycle of seven', which is the key number that made the company famous throughout the world.

This would have been switched on and off with the pin to the right of the winding stem, which has also been removed. The dial is signed MM&Co Patent and this relates to an 1895 patent for the construction of special plates for use in accumulators such as the one that would have powered the light.

The balance wheel swings freely, but the movement has not been wound, nor tested.Case: In good condition with no obvious sign of damage, losses or repairs. Some minor surface scratches to the cartouche, visible under magnification.

Vulliamy, London - A 19th century 18ct gold open faced pocket watch, circa 1834, the signed engine turned dial with floral inner, 36mm diameter, with black Roman numerals and blued moon hands, signed mechanical key wind cylinder movement signed VULLIAMY ucsm LONDON, case, 40mm, verso hinged at 6 o'clock with engine turned decoration, interior with London hallmarks for 18ct gold, untraced casemaker's mark (P.M rectangular cartouche), the part marked cuvette additionally engraved VULLIAMY LONDON, 50g gross, presented with the winding keysAlthough originally from Switzerland, the Vulliamy family achieved renown as one of Britain’s finest makers of clocks and watches in the 18th and 19th century. The firm obtained the appointment of Clockmakers to the Crown in 1742, a position it held for 112 years. Benjamin Vulliamy died in 1854 and the firm was purchased by Charles Frodsham in the same year.
