Victorian Humour in a Graphic Didactic Primer - an illustrated manuscript, comprising two works, each with a separate title-page, Passions of Ye Period, [&], A Few Clippings from Mavors,/ [with] Spelling Book, pp: [i] (watercolour frontispiece), [10], [1] (blank), [1] (allegorical watercolour colophon of a jester observing the passage of time with a pocket watch); [38] (interspersed with a few blanks, not collated), [1] (macabre colophon of a hanged cat), the relaxed instructive text is brilliantly illustrated with well-executed monochrome pen-and-ink drawings and cartoons, the artist-author must have had a sense of humour, as he relishes farce, the ridiculous, and pricking the stuffy pomposity of Victorian social mores, with parallels of the extremes of virtue and vice in 'Ye Passions,' set and illustrated in the Anglo-Saxon manner with 'illuminations' of lust, gratuitous violence, gluttony, and-so-on, the second part is well-illustrated by the same hand, but with more contemporary themes, fashions, and-so-forth, and also includes some novel and comic storyboards, unfortunately there are no inscriptions or dates as to identify this talented hand and its wicked humour, 19th century limp olive morocco , 16mo (16cm x 10cm), [1]
