A QUEEN ANNE VERGE POCKET WATCH MOVEMENTBY TOMPION AND BANGER, C.1710-20, NUMBER 3575the backplate with a pierced and engraved scrolling foliate balance cock with similarly decorated foot, with silvered regulator and inscribed 'TOMPION & BANGER, LONDON, 3575', with four 'Egyptian' pillars and a gilt chain driven single fusee verge movement, mounted as a sedan style timepiece with a white enamelled dial with black Roman hours and Arabic quarters, in a mahogany and brass circular frame with a brass bezel with domed glass and a hinged locking brass back door, with an urn shaped suspension hoop 16.5cm diameter Catalogue NoteThomas Tompion (1639-1713), often referred to as the 'Father of of English Clock and Watch Making', was born in Ickwell, Suffolk, and was working in the clock and watch industry by 1670. Having obtained his freedom of the Clockmakers Company in 1671, he worked with a number of apprentices, including Edward Banger, with whom he eventually went into partnership around 1700-1701. However, this partnership didn't last and was disolved by 1708 meaning clocks and watches signed 'Tompion and Banger', such as this example, can be accurated to this short, early 18th century period.
